MALIBU, Calif. — Catcher Jack Collins finished a triple shy of a cycle, second baseman Ryan Fenn, and right fielder Dylan Kordic both drove in a pair of runs while sophomore southpaw Luke Kalfsbeek pitched five strong innings as Cal Poly defeated Pepperdine 10-2 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Fenn's solo home run snapped a 2-2 tie and ignited a five-run sixth-inning rally while three Mustang relievers held Pepperdine scoreless the rest of the way. Cal Poly won for the 14th time in its last 17 games and elevated its record in midweek games to 4-0, all on the road.
Cal Poly improved to 15-8 for the season, producing double-digit hits for the 12th time in its last 16 games, while Pepperdine fell to 5-19.
Kalfsbeek (2-0) allowed two runs and three hits over his five-inning stint on the mound with one walk and four strikeouts for the victory. After pitching four scoreless frames, he gave up a two-run home run to Joe Cardinale which tied the game in the fifth inning. He was still the pitcher of record for Cal Poly when Fenn opened the sixth with his tiebreaking home run to left.
Chris Downs relieved Kalfsbeek to start the bottom of the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings. Carson Turnquist secured the first two outs in the eighth while Tanner Sagouspe nailed down the victory with 1 1/3 shutout frames.
Collins was 3-for-4 at the plate, including a solo home run in the seventh inning, lifting his average to .380, while Fenn added two hits as Cal Poly outhit the host Waves 12-3.
Cal Poly opened the scoring in the second inning as Collins doubled, center fielder Casey Murray Jr. tripled to score Collins and shortstop Nate Castellon grounded out to push across Murray.
After Pepperdine tied the game in the fifth, Fenn hit his first home run of the year opening the sixth. Kordic's single up the middle scored two runs, a wild pitch accounted for another run and first baseman Zach Daudet drew a bases-loaded walk, his third free pass of the game to go along with a single, for the final run of the inning.
Collins' seventh home run of the season gave Cal Poly an 8-2 cushion in the seventh and the Mustangs added two more runs in the eighth on RBI singles off the bats of left fielder Dante Vachini and Fenn.
Cal Poly continues its five-game road trip and resumes Big West play this weekend at UC Davis.
