Second-Half Stampede Sends Cal Poly into Big West Quarterfinals
3/13/2025 12:05:00 AM | Men's Basketball
HENDERSON, Nev. – Owen Koonce scored a team high 18 points, Isaac Jessup finished with 17 and Jarred Hyder added 16 as the seventh-seeded Cal Poly men's basketball program turned a nine-point halftime deficit against No. 6 UC Davis during Wednesday evening's Big West Championship opening round into an 86-76 victory inside Lee's Family Forum.
Mac Riniker recorded 12 points while Las Vegas native Aaron, Price, Jr. (above), enjoyed 11 for Cal Poly (15-18), which trailed at the break, 47-38, before outscoring the Aggies, 21-9, to open the second half and take a 59-56 lead with 12-and-a-half minutes to play. Shooting 66.7 (20-for-30) percent during the second half, Cal Poly led by as much as 14 down the stretch.
Claiming its first Big West Championship win against UC Davis since 2013, Cal Poly advanced to face third-seeded UC Riverside (21-11) in Thursday's quarterfinal round. Tip time on ESPN+ is 8:30 p.m. The Mustangs and Highlanders – who received a bye to the quarterfinals – split the regular season series.
UC Davis knocked down nine of its first 10 shot attempts to open Wednesday's matchup and Cal Poly, despite its own 50.0 (8-for-16) percent shooting start, trailed after nine minutes, 29-21.
The Mustangs, however, scored on four straight possessions – a run capped by Jessup's second three-pointer of the night – to cut the deficit to 32-30 eight minutes before the break.
Held scoreless for the next four minutes, Cal Poly snapped the drought with a Koonce three-pointer, but UC Davis – which shot 65.2 (15-for-23) percent from the floor during the first half – took a 47-38 advantage into the break.
Still facing a 54-46 deficit with 17 minutes to play, Cal Poly received back-to-back Koonce layups before Jessup converted one of his own to bring the Mustangs within two.
Another layup – this one from Price, Jr. – tied the matchup at 56-56 before Price knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to place the Mustangs in front in the game's only lead change.
