LAS VEGAS, Nev. — For the first time ever, the Cal Poly wrestling program has five placers at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Koda Holeman (125 pounds), Zeth Romney (133), Cash Stewart (174), Ceasar Garza (184) and Trevor Tinker (285) all had standout performances Friday, advancing to the final day of the tournament Saturday and guaranteeing themselves a placing position at the 43rd edition of the tournament.
Tinker will wrestle in the semifinals at heavyweight on Saturday, while the other four remaining Mustangs are in the consolation bracket in their respective weight classes with a chance to place as high as third.
Currently, Cal Poly sits in 11th place out of 32 teams with 43 points.
Action on the final day of the tournament gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday with semifinal matches, and consolation semifinals and finals. The championship finals in each weight class will take place at 3 p.m. inside the Westgate Hotel Paradise Event Center. You can watch the tournament live on FloWrestling and you can follow Cal Poly wrestling on X/Twitter (@CalPolyWrestle) and Instagram (@cpwrestle) for live updates throughout the final day of action.
Romney, Stewart, Garza and Tinker all advanced to the quarterfinals in their weight classes Friday, but Tinker was the only one that was able to emerge victorious in their quarterfinal bout to book a ticket to the semifinals.
The 17th-ranked heavyweight in the country opened the tournament with a dominant 8-0 major decision and four minutes of riding time before scoring an upset victory over No. 12-ranked Luke Rasmussen from South Dakota State by a 6-2 decision to secure a spot in the semifinals Saturday.
Tinker, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, will face top seeded and No. 1 ranked Yonger Bastida from Iowa State in the semifinals.
Stewart had arguably the most impressive performance of the day for the Mustangs, posting a 2-1 record as an unseeded wrestler at 174 pounds and earning himself a placing position at the tournament. Stewart started the day with some revenge, securing a dramatic 6-5 win by decision over Cal State Bakersfield’s Guillermo Escobedo, who he lost to in overtime during a dual at Mott Athletics Center just three weeks ago. Stewart then dropped a tight 4-1 decision to No. 25-ranked Carter Schubert from Oklahoma before bouncing back in a big way in his next match, defeating Arizona State’s Leo Tukhlynovych by a 14-4 major decision.
Garza went 3-1 on Friday to secure a placing position at 184. He opened the day with a pin and decision before dropping a major decision to No. 7 ranked Brock Mantanona from Michigan. Then Garza ended the day with a hard-fought 11-10 decision over Arizona’s Shay Addison.
Romney, the 2024 133-pound Cliff Keen champion, started the day in spectacular fashion, pinning Sacred Heart’s John Hildebrandt at 4:24 to earn a spot in the 141-pound quarterfinals. There, the 2025 NCAA All-American dropped a nail biter to Oregon State’s Nash Singleton by a 10-9 decision. The fifth ranked wrestler in the country rebounded with a 5-3 decision in his first consolation match to secure a placing position at the Cliff Keen Invitational for the second straight year.
After falling by major decision to No. 16-ranked Marc-Anthony McGowan from Princeton in his opening match at the tourney, Holeman reeled off three straight victories by decision at 125 pounds to advance to the second day of competition in Vegas.
Anthony Lucio (133), Andre Gonzales (149), Jagger French (157), Luke Gayer (165) and Cole Jackson (197) all saw their showings in Vegas come to an end on the opening day. French and Jackson both went 2-2 at the tournament, Gonzales posted a 1-2 mark, and Lucio and Gayer both finished 0-2.
