
2 Mustangs Place at Reno Tournament of Champions

RENO, Nev. — Redshirt sophomore Tyler Hodges and true freshman Christian Garcia both placed in their respective weight classes to highlight action for Cal Poly wrestling at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
A total of seven Mustangs took part in the tourney held inside the Reno Events Center. Hodges, Garcia and true freshman Matthew Luna all made it to the quarterfinals in their weight class.
Hodges captured fifth place at 197 pounds with an impressive 5-1 mark. Four of his victories came by bonus points as he secured three wins by technical fall and a second-round pin to open his showing at the tournament.
Garcia posted a 3-2 mark to secure a sixth-place finish at 125 pounds. Two of his three wins came by major decision and he dropped a 5-2 decision to Wyoming’s Isaiah Harrison in the fifth-place match.
Luna went 4-2 at 149 pounds, winning all with bonus points — three major decisions and one technical fall. Luna ended his tournament by dropping a 9-3 decision to Utah Valley’s Jason Worthley, finishing one victory short of placing.
Redshirt sophomore Gavin Fernandez (149) recorded a 3-2 mark at the tournament, and redshirt freshman Ryan Clink (174) and freshman Caleb Rivas (133) both went 2-2.
Cal Poly heads to Evanston, Illinois, on Dec. 29-30 to compete in the 61st annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern.
