SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Mustangs secured a decisive 30-9 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday evening, improving their dual-meet record to 1-1 and notching their first conference win of 2025.
Departing from Coach Jon Sioredas's usual strategy of starting at 125 pounds, the match began at 141 pounds.
Stepping in for the injured Zeth Romney, true freshman Aiden Simmons rose to the occasion with a narrow 4-2 decision over Santino Sanchez.
At 149 pounds, Andre Gonzales battled Mikah Labuanan in a close contest for most of the bout but sealed an 11-3 major decision with a takedown in the final 40 seconds, giving the Mustangs an early 7-0 lead.
Jagger French used a huge first period to power a 22-10 major decision over Devyn Flores Che at 157 pounds, securing back-to-back majors for Cal Poly and extending the lead to 11-0.
The Mustangs then dropped a pair of decisions, with Luke Gayer falling at 165 pounds to Evan Manzo and Cash Stewart losing at 174 to Guillermo Escobedo.
In response, Cal Poly’s No. 24 Ceasar Garza dominated Chris Neal, earning a 20-4 technical fall just over a minute into the second period of the 184-pound bout.
Cole Jackson added another four points with a 15-7 major decision over Angel Cervantes, sealed by a late takedown in the final 30 seconds.
Adding to the onslaught, No. 16 Trevor Tinker needed only two minutes to pin Mason Cover, scoring a full six points. This pushed Cal Poly's lead to 26-6, mathematically clinching the dual meet.
In the night's only ranked-versus-ranked matchup, No. 26 Koda Holeman earned an 11-3 major decision over No. 30 Richard Castro-Sandoval, adding four more points to the lead.
The meet concluded with Anthony Lucio's 2-0 decision loss to RJ Jones, but the Mustangs still came away with a definitive 30-9 victory.
Cal Poly now shifts its focus from the dual-meet format to the annual Roadrunner Open, hosted by CSU Bakersfield, next week.
