SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Mike Wickham, who brings nearly a quarter century of experience working in front offices of professional and collegiate sports, has been named Cal Poly Athletics' new Associate AD for Business and Finance.
Wickham has most recently been the Senior Associate AD for Strategy, Innovation, and Business Operations at Fresno State. He's held that role since January of 2022. At Fresno State, he oversaw strategy implementation, analytics, equipment, and management of athletics business operations and staff. He was the primary liaison to campus and the Athletic Corporation Board of Directors on strategic and financial matters.
"We are beyond excited to welcome Mike Wickham to Mustang Athletics," Senior Associate Athletics Director Jackson Stava said. "Through this search Mike quickly established himself as someone who has the professional experience and personal characteristics that established him as the perfect choice for this role. His professionalism, wisdom, communication skills, unique background, and passion for student-athlete success will immediately impact our entire department. We are thrilled to welcome Mike, Heidi, and their family to the Mustang community."
Prior to arriving at Fresno State, Wickham spent two decades working in Major League Baseball in front office roles. His extensive career in MLB includes contributions to a World Series Championship and numerous minor league titles. He was pivotal in merging innovative analytics and traditional scouting methods to identify the next generation of MLB stars. His career includes expertise in roster construction, contract negotiation, player development, and the management of budgets exceeding $120 million.
"I am excited to be joining Cal Poly Athletics and contributing to its proud tradition of excellence, Wickham said. "I look forward to working with our incredible coaches, staff, and student-athletes as we build on the strong foundation that makes Cal Poly an extraordinary place to learn and compete."
He has worked for the Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, Miami Marlins, Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants, and New York Mets. In Houston, he played a key personnel role in building the foundation that led to seven consecutive American League Championship Series and four World Series appearances.
"I am very excited to welcome Mike to Cal Poly," said David Valadez, Cal Poly's Associate Vice President of Financial Services. "His strong background in both finance and athletics will be invaluable as we continue to support our student-athletes and teams in navigating an ever-changing, high-pressure financial landscape."
A native of Stockton, Wickham graduated from North Park University in Chicago with a degree in accounting and passed the CPA. He and his wife, Heidi, have two children.
