SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling team earned its highest national ranking in three years this week, climbing to No. 15 in the latest InterMat Team Tournament rankings.

The No. 15 ranking is the best by the Mustangs in the InterMat poll since Cal Poly checked in at No. 10 on Feb. 22, 2022 — marking the first team in 39 years the program achieved a top 10 ranking.
“This is a great milestone for our program being among some of the top programs in the country,” ninth-year head coach Jon Sioredas said about the ranking. “This reflects the consistency in our training and the commitment to excellence from our student-athletes, and we are excited for what’s ahead.”
Cal Poly has steadily climbed up the InterMat rankings throughout the season thanks to some stellar performances, earning a top 25 national ranking as a team for the fifth straight season.
“We’re extremely proud of our wrestling program for achieving a top 15 national ranking,” Cal Poly Director of Athletics Don Oberhelman said. “Coach Sioredas and his staff have consistently raised the bar since taking over the program, and this year is no different. This ranking is a testament to our wrestlers’ commitment to excelling at the highest level both on the mat and in the classroom.”
The Mustangs currently boast four nationally-ranked wrestlers according to InterMat, led by redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney, who moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 nationally at 133 pounds in the latest rankings.
Romney, who owns an 11-1 record, has been sensational on the mat this season. At the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in December, the Simi Valley, Calif. native won the 133-pound championship, defeating four nationally ranked opponents en route to becoming the first Mustang in 15 years to capture a title at 133 pounds at the tournament. The performance earned him Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honors for the fourth time in his career and second time this season. Mostly recently, Romney went 2-0 at the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 10-11, pinning No. 6-ranked Nasir Bailey at 4:14 in a dual with Little Rock to pick up his eighth victory over a ranked opponent this season.
Redshirt junior Chance Lamer is ranked sixth in the country at 149 pounds and is a perfect 10-0 on the season, going 5-0 at the NWCA National Duals in his first action on the mat since a home dual with Stanford on Nov. 16. Lamer is a two-time NCAA Round of 12 qualifier, falling one victory short of earning All-American honors the last two years.
Luka Wick checks in at No. 24 nationally at 165 pounds with an 8-4 record this season, recording an undefeated 5-0 mark at the NWCA National Duals and two upset wins over ranked opponents in the process to climb up the rankings. Trevor Tinker has been dominant all season long and currently sits at No. 25 at heavyweight with an impressive 17-5 record, also posting an undefeated mark (5-0) at the NWCA National Duals.
Redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman isn’t ranked at the moment by InterMat, but owns a ranking of 32nd at 125 pounds from FloWrestling with a 15-8 record.
The hard-charging Mustangs host four duals at Mott Athletics Center over the next four weeks to wrap up their 2025 home schedule. Cal Poly hosts SIUE first at noon on Sunday, Feb. 2, and then opens its Pac-12 dual slate on Friday, Feb. 7, against Oregon State at 7 p.m. The team’s home finale is set for Friday, Feb. 14, when the Mustangs host back-to-back duals against Northern Illinois and No. 18 Little Rock at 5:30 and 7 p.m. respectively.
