CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The Cal Poly wrestling team capped off its showing at the NWCA National Duals on Saturday by securing a pair of decisive consolation victories inside University of Northern Iowa’s UNI-Dome.
The Mustangs, seeded ninth out of the 14 mid-major teams that wrestled in the Division I bracket, picked up wins over No. 8 seed Ohio and No. 14 seed Sacred Heart to finish with a 3-2 overall record at the two-day dual tournament. Over 100 teams across six different divisions competed in the NWCA Nationals Duals.
Cal Poly (3-6) started the final day of action by rolling to a 30-16 victory over Ohio in the first meeting all-time between the two programs. Koda Holeman, ranked 30th in the country at 125 pounds, set the tone and helped the Mustangs get off to a blistering with a pin just 36 seconds into his match.
Cal Poly fed off the momentum of that win and quickly built a 25-6 lead thanks to some impressive performances. True freshman Alek VanBebber earned a thrilling 8-5 sudden victory at 141 pounds, earning a late takedown in the third period to force overtime where he grabbed another takedown just seconds in to wrap up the comeback victory. Brothers Chance Lamer — the seventh-ranked 149-pounder in the country — and Legend Lamer secured back-to-back technical falls with Chance winning 20-3 and Legend shutting out his opponent 15-0. Less than a day after capturing two upset victories over nationally ranked opponents, the 28th-ranked 165-pounder in the nation, Luka Wick, pinned Ohio’s Jack Lledo at 5:35 to complete the string of victories for the Mustangs.
Trevor Tinker, the 29th-ranked heavyweight in the country, secured the final victory for the Mustangs in the dual with the Bobcats, winning by technical fall 16-0. Cal Poly finished with three technical falls and two pins in the dual with Ohio.
The Mustangs kept things rolling in the dual with Sacred Heart, cruising to a 31-12 win with three bonus-point victories. In the first meeting between the two programs all-time, Cal Poly and the Pioneers traded forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds before VanBebber stepped on the mat at 141 pounds and earned a narrow 2-1 decision over Andrew Fallon. Then Chance took the mat and wrapped up a dominant day of wrestling, grabbing another technical fall, 21-5. Legend snagged a 5-0 decision at 157 pounds and then Wick bullied his opponent at 165 pounds en route to a 17-0 technical fall.
A day after picking up his first career dual victory in his debut in the Mustang lineup, Wesley Wilson picked up another win, earning a 12-5 decision over Sacred Heart’s Kevin Taylor at 197 pounds. Tinker capped off Cal Poly’s 2-0 day on the mat in commanding fashion, pinning his opponent at heavyweight 1:22 into their match.
Holeman, VanBebber, Chance, Legend, Wick and Tinker all went 2-0 in their matches Saturday. Thanks to their performances on the final day, Chance, Wick and Tinker all finished 5-0 across Cal Poly’s five duals at the tournament. Chance is now a perfect 10-0 on the season, Wick is 8-4 and Tinker is 17-5. Holeman posted a 4-1 record across the duals, improving to 15-8 on the year.
Cal Poly returns to action in three weeks to host Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Sunday, Feb. 2, at Mott Athletics Center.
