SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the second time in his career, redshirt junior Spencer Pickren has earned Big West Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.
The praise for Pickren comes on the heels of a strong performance by the Folsom, Calif. native at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, where he placed 12th overall with an 8K time of 23:48.1. His 8K time on the Ag/Ops Course, the site of the 2024 Big West Championship, is currently the fastest ran in the conference this season.
Pickren’s showing helped the Cal Poly men secure a third-place finish as a team, the highest of the seven Big West schools that competed in the meet.
Pickren earned Big West weekly honors for the first time last season on Sept. 5, 2023, when he won the individual title at the Big West Preview meet hosted by the Mustangs at the Blacklake Golf Resort.
Pickren placed sixth overall at the Big West Championships last season and on the track has qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries in the men’s 1,500-meter the last two years (2023, 2024).
The Cal Poly cross country team returns to action on Friday, Oct. 4, to compete in the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola University Chicago.
