SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling team recently bolstered its 2024-25 roster, signing a pair of transfers from schools that finished inside the top 15 at last year's NCAA Championships.
Korbin Shepherd, who spent the past three years at Missouri, and Joel Jesuroga, who wrestled at Iowa the last two seasons, are both set to join the Mustangs next season.
"We are excited to welcome our two transfers, as they both embody our core values and will make an immediate impact on our program," Cal Poly wrestling head coach Jon Sioredas said.
Shepherd is expected to wrestle at 141 pounds for the Mustangs, while Joel is currently slotted to compete at 157 pounds. Both are transferring to Cal Poly with three years of eligibility remaining.
A Blue Springs, Missouri, native, Shepherd won the 133-pound title at the Maryville Open this past year and posted a 4-2 overall record before seeing his third season at Missouri cut short due to injury. During his first collegiate season in 2021-22, Shepherd got off to a strong 9-0 start for the Tigers at 133 pounds and recorded a 10-2 overall mark while redshirting.
Shepherd enters Cal Poly with a 19-9 overall collegiate record while wrestling at 133 and 141 pounds, earning eight victories by fall and six by technical fall.
"Korbin will be coming in from one of the best ran programs in the country and has had success at every level he has competed at," Sioredas said, "and we fully anticipate his success to continue here at Cal Poly."
Shepherd was a dominant wrestler at Blue Springs High, posting an impressive 149-9 record across his prep career, including an undefeated 32-0 mark during his senior season. He won two MSHSAA state titles and was a four-time state finalist. He was named Academic All-State three times and was a Folkstyle Nationals All-American in 2019.
A Pleasant Hill, Iowa native, Jesuroga made his collegiate debut for Iowa in 2022-23, going 9-2 as an attached wrestler and 14-6 overall at 149 pounds during his redshirt season. He took first in his weight class at the Lindenwood Open that year and made his dual debut for the No. 2-ranked Hawkeyes at the time against Chattanooga.
As a redshirt freshman in 2023-24, Jesuroga posted an 11-4 mark for the Hawkeyes and secured three victories by technical fall. He currently has a 25-10 overall collegiate record while wrestling at 149 pounds.
"Joel brings a sense of intensity and focus," Sioredas said, "and after his experience at the University of Iowa, he will bring his incredible work ethic to our program, and we could not be more excited."
Jesuroga captured a state title as a junior while wrestling for Southeast Polk High with a 30-1 record. He was a four-time conference champion and a three-time state placer during his prep career, finishing with a 125-19 overall mark. Jesuroga, ranked No. 23 nationally in his class at 145 pounds and No. 154 overall by MatScouts, won a junior freestyle state title and was runner-up in Greco-Roman. He was also a member of Team Iowa when they won the junior freestyle nationals duals.
Shepherd and Jesuroga join 11 freshmen as part of Cal Poly's 2024-25 incoming class.
