Cal Poly Falls to UC Irvine in Extra Innings After Defensive Deadlock
5/4/2024 4:30:00 PM | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Jake Steels extended his reached-base streak to 44 games while Ryan Stafford increased his hit streak to 24 games, but Cal Poly (27-17, 16-7 BW) fell to UC Irvine (34-9, 15-5 BW) in extra innings 4-3 after a hard-fought defensive battle.
For the second consecutive day, UC Irvine picked up the game's first score when leading hitter Caden Kendle placed an RBI-triple into the right field corner. The next Anteater built on that with his own double in the same location for a two-run lead in the first inning.
With the exception of a single from Ryan Stafford in the first inning, the Mustangs were sat in order through the first three frames, including UCI's Trevor Hanson striking out the side in the third. Stafford's hit took his streak to 24 games, which now gives him sole possession of third place in Cal Poly's D1 history, just two away from tying the record.
Stafford's second hit of the game set Cal Poly up in scoring position as Ryan Fenn connected on a triple to score Stafford from first base, cutting the UCI lead. Joe Yorke grounded out during the next at-bat but not before scoring Fenn to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth.
Despite the early first inning scoring stretch for the Anteaters, Steven Brooks went on a superb run of his own by sitting the next 11 consecutive batters for a trio of 1-2-3 innings. This included three strikeouts and just two hits allowed through five innings up to that point.
A pitcher's duel ensued as Cal Poly and UC Irvine went into the penultimate inning with three straight scoreless frames apiece. Despite the Anteaters getting a pair of go-ahead baserunners, Brooks stood tall once again to up his strikeout total (7) and shut the opposition down.
Both the Mustangs and Anteaters went into extra innings after stalling on offense. Stafford was able to get on base with a well hit single through the gap between short and third, advancing on a steal deep into Fenn's next at-bat.
In extras, Fenn knocked some contact down to the Irvine third baseman who had trouble with the ball on a bounce. That turned into a fielding error that allowed Stafford to streak all the way home for a go-ahead 3-2 Cal Poly lead.
Just two batters into the bottom of the tenth, UC Irvine managed to split the outfield in left-center and get the tying run all the way home with an RBI-double. Shortly after, a sacrifice bunt and well-hit ball off the left-center wall scored the game's winning run for the Anteaters.
After UC Irvine was able to tie the series today, the Mustangs will look for a clinching win in the series finale tomorrow with 1:00 p.m. set for first pitch.
