Four Home Runs Propel Cal Poly to Extra-Innings Series Clincher Over CSUB

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Poised to momentarily snatch first place in the Big West after UC Irvine (25-7, 11-4 BW) lost a series over the weekend, Cal Poly (20-14, 11-4 BW) managed to do just that with a thrilling win over Cal State Bakersfield (11-24, 6-9 BW) in extra innings. The Mustangs relied solely on home runs, two from Ryan Stafford along with one each from Cam Hoiland and Aaron Casillas, to take a 5-4 win in the 11th inning.
For the third time in the series, Cal State Bakersfield opened up the top of the first with an RBI, this one a double down the left field line. The fourth Roadrunner batter knocked in a pair of runs by going the opposite way with a single before another RBI-single to left center made the score 4-0.
Ryan Stafford, four pitches into his at-bat, found an answer for CSUB's scoring with his third home run of the season, crushing a ball over the left-center wall numbers. After allowing four runs in the first, Griffin Naess settled down to pitch a pair of scoreless innings and keep the Bakersfield bats at bay.
Playing up to their reputation, the CSUB rotation continued its impressive run of form as the Roadrunner starter held Cal Poly to one run through the first four innings, but the Mustangs finally found a way to break through and remove the deficit by the 7th inning.
Following Jake Steels getting on base in the 5th, which also extended his streak to 34 games, Stafford went yard for the second time in the game to cut the deficit down to just one run with CSUB leading 4-3. Stafford became just the fourth Mustang since 2019 with a multi-home run game.
Cal Poly's bullpen made a clear difference in earning a chance to come back. Ryan Baum took the mound for a relief appearance in the fourth and pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball before Tanner Sagouspe came in and continued the good work.
Cam Hoiland, pinch hitting for Casey Murray Jr., tied the contest at 4-4 with his lead-off solo home run. Up to that point, all of the Mustangs' scores had come via home runs with Hoiland's being the first of his Division I career.
Sagouspe, who would go on to pitch 3 scoreless innings with a trio of strikeouts, stranded two potential go-ahead runners in the 8th inning. In the final at-bat of the 9th for Bakersfield, a pass-ball and throw to second from Stafford gunned down yet another go-ahead runner.
Heading into double innings, Bakersfield was able to extend the 10th with two outs to get runners on the corners. In a pinch, head coach Larry Lee turned to Jake Torres. Despite plunking his first batter to load the bases, Torres stopped a line drive on the next at-bat for the ground out.
Looking for a run in the 11th, the Roadrunners were able to place one in deep center field, but savvy relay fielding from the Mustangs got the ball all the way back to Stafford at home plate who tagged out the would-be CSUB scorer.
Aaron Casillas, the former Roadrunner, got a hold of a 2-2 pitch left over the middle of the plate with two outs left and absolutely crushed it to his opposite side. After four unanswered home runs, Cal Poly walked it off to take a fifth straight Big West series and go atop the Big West standing next to UC Irvine.
Next up, Cal Poly faces off against Santa Clara in a midweek matchup before traveling to Hawai'i for another weekend conference series. Santa Clara (18-15, 6-6 WCC) is coming off a series sweep against Pepperdine. The Broncos and Mustangs get started on Tuesday, April 16 at 5:00 p.m. for a battle between two surging foes.
