Chance Falls in NCAA Round of 12; Cal Poly Wraps Up Season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Cal Poly wrestling program saw its 2023-2024 season and showing at the NCAA Championships come to an end Friday inside the T-Mobile Center.
The three Mustangs that made it to the second day of the NCAA Championships were unable to make it to the final day of the tournament as redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer came up short in the Round of 12, while graduate student Adam Kemp and redshirt junior Legend Lamer fell short in consolation matches.
After posting a perfect 2-0 record on the first day of NCAAs on Thursday, Chance suffered a defeat by major decision to Arizona State's Kyle Parco, a three-time All-American, in his quarterfinal bout at 149 pounds to move to the consolation bracket. There, Chance squared off against No. 11 seed Quinn Kinner from Rider with an opportunity to earn All-American honors on the line. Unfortunately, Chance came up short in a back-and-forth affair, finishing his first season as a Mustang with a 19-6 record.
Last year as a redshirt freshman at Michigan, Chance also advanced to the Round of 12 at NCAAs and fell in the blood round.
At 174 pounds, Kemp started his day Friday with a thrilling 4-1 sudden victory over No. 23 seed Luca Augustine from Pitt in a second round consolation match. Then, in his next bout Kemp dropped a 13-8 decision to No. 15 MJ Gaitan from Iowa State, ending his run at NCAAs. In his second appearance at NCAAs, Kemp posted a 2-2 mark and finished the season with an 18-5 record.
Legend saw his third appearance at the NCAA Championships come to an end Friday morning as he lost a 5-2 decision to No. 19 Tommy Askey from Appalachian State in the second round of consolations. He ended the year with a 15-10 record.
Despite the season not ending the way the Mustangs had hoped, 2023-24 was yet another banner year for the program as Cal Poly sent five wrestlers to NCAAs for the third consecutive year — just the second time in program history the team has accomplished that feat and the first since qualifying at least five from 2003 to 2007. The Mustangs also reached as high as No. 23 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this year and boasted six nationally ranked wrestlers for most of the season.
The future is bright under head coach Jon Sioredas — who just wrapped up his eighth season leading the program — as Cal Poly returns nearly every starter next season.
Placing matches at the NCAA Championships start at 8 a.m. PDT Saturday with championship bouts scheduled to start at 4 p.m. PDT live on ESPN.
