Wright Strikes Out 10 as Cal Poly Upsets No. 25 UCSB
3/22/2024 11:10:00 PM | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — On a breezy Friday series opener, Cal Poly handed No. 25 ranked UC Santa Barbara its first conference loss of the season with help from Jakob Wright's 10-strikeouts and Joe Yorke's 3-for-5, 3-RBI performance.
The Mustangs (11-9, 3-1 Big West) seemed to have no problem silencing one of the nation's best offenses while making quick work of the No. 52 ranked prospect in the upcoming MLB First-Year Player Draft, starting pitcher Matt Ager. Cal Poly kept UCSB at an arm's length all game before breaking ahead in the final few innings for a commanding 8-3 victory.
With over 20 big league scouts in attendance to most likely watch the stacked Gaucho lineup, Cal Poly made the most of its opportunities at every turn, with Wright turning in a pitching appearance well-worth the cost of admission.
Wright opened the game with a 5-pitch swinging strikeout to cut down Ivan Brethowr. He had some trouble finding the zone when walking the two and three-hole hitters before Zander Darby, a top-100 ranked college prospect, grounded out for fielder's choice to first, moving runners to second and third. Justin Trimble fought to 3-2 count with two RISP, but Wright notched his second K of the inning to slam the door shut.
In the bottom of the first, Jake Steels continued racking up HBP, his 10th of the year. A wild pitch allowed Steels his third stolen base of the year before Joe Yorke went right up the middle for a hard-hit grounder that brought Steels home for a 1-0 Cal Poly lead.
Wright's horizontal breaking ball, known as a "sweeper," threw UCSB hitters for a loop as the redshirt sophomore picked up his third and fourth K's of the game, both on backdoor sweepers in a 1-2-3 inning.
Dylan Kordic squeezed one just past the shortstop's outstretched glove for a lead-off single in the bottom of the second. A wild pitch with two outs sent Kordic to second for his first stolen base of the year. Cam Hoiland was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Steels followed that up with an RBI-single past the diving UCSB right fielder who was backed up by the center fielder, relaying with the second baseman to throw out Hoiland at home, preventing a second run from scoring.
Strikeout number five for Wright on Reiss Calvin made it his third straight inning of leadoff K's. Despite allowing a double from Brethowr, Wright promptly struck out leading hitter Brendan Durfee with full-count before also striking out the side with his seventh of the game as another sweeping breaker went past Aaron Parker.
The sweeping ball took yet another victim in the next inning as Wright passed his season-high strikeout mark with 8 in the game.
In the top of the fifth, UCSB's Nick Oakley led off with a triple that Dylan Kordic could not play at the left field track, putting a RISP early. Brethowr got the Guachos on the board, singling an RBI into the hole between short and third. However, they still trailed Cal Poly by one run.
Casillas led off the bottom of the fifth with a single over the second baseman's head. A perfectly placed bunt into no-man's land between first and the mound gave Hoiland a trip to first while also advancing Casillas to second.
Steels took a walk to juice the bases, and a well-placed infield grounder just to the left of second base got the runner out at second but not the double play as Casillas still scored. Yorke then crushed a ball through the left side to score another run, stretching it to a double as the left fielder had trouble gathering the grounder, as the Mustangs pulled ahead 4-1.
Wright struck out yet another lead-off batter in the sixth, bringing the starter to 10 on the day, one short of tying his single-game career-high mark. A two-runner jam brought in Jake Torres, who took little time to strike out two batters and pull Cal Poly out of the jam despite giving up one run.
Casillas, who started to get hot in the CSUN series, picked up his second hit of the day with a solid two-out single to shallow center field in the sixth. Matt Agers then hit Hoiland with a pitch that put Mustang runners on first and second, forcing the starting pitcher out of the game for Cole Tryba. Steels continued his day at 2-for-2 with a well-hit line drive to right field that scored Casillas on an RBI-double, giving the Mustangs another three-run lead at 5-2.
Durfee opened the next UCSB frame with a double down the right field line before advancing on a ground out and sac fly RBI, cutting into the Cal Poly lead, 3-5. Torres sat down Brown on strikes to end the inning and limit UCSB's offense again.
Cloyd was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Casillas then picked up his third hit of the game with a single to left field, putting Cloyd in scoring position. Wyatt King, relieving Hoiland in left field a few innings earlier, bunted between home and the mound, moving the runners ahead into scoring position on the sacrifice.
Tate Shimao came to third, pinch running for Cloyd after Steels was intentionally walked to load bases with just one out on the board. An innocent-looking pop up to center field was dropped, allowing Stafford to reach first on an error-induced sac fly that scored both Shimao and Casillas.
Yet another wild pitch advanced the remaining runners as Fenn was then intentionally walked to load the bases with Yorke up to bat. Yorke wasted no time with a first-pitch fielder's choice that brought Steels across home plate for the 8-3 lead that would go on to seal the game.
Tanner Sagouspe took the mound, attempting to close the night and earn redemption for the series finale against CSUN. Sagouspe made no mistakes, completely shutting down the Gauchos with three straight fly-outs to take a much-deserved victory on Friday night, snapping UCSB's 7-game win streak.
