SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the first time in his career, redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman has been named the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week.
Holeman received the award on Tuesday, becoming the third Cal Poly wrestler to earn the honor this season. Redshirt junior Trevor Tinker claimed the first award of the year on Nov. 5 and redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney has garnered the praise twice on Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.
The honor for Holeman comes after the 125-pounder advanced to the quarterfinals at the 60th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Sunday and Monday. Ranked 30th in the country at his weight class, Holeman started the tournament with an 8-4 decision over Harvard’s Logan Brzozowski before pinning Indiana’s Blaine Frazier at 6:22 in his second match to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
The Clovis native nearly scored an upset victory in the quarterfinals, coming up just short to 17th-ranked Max Gallagher from Penn via sudden victory, 4-1. Holeman wrapped up his showing at Midlands Monday by falling in his Round of 12 match, finishing one victory short of placing at the tournament.
Holeman finished with a 2-2 record at the tourney to improve to 11-7 on the year.
Cal Poly travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Jan. 10-11 to wrestle in the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships held inside Northern Iowa’s UNI-Dome.
Congrats to Koda Holeman, who has been named @pac12 Wrestler of the Week for the first time in his career ??
