SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the third time in his career and the first time this season, Cal Poly’s Zeth Romney has earned Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honors.
The praise comes after the redshirt sophomore’s stellar performance on the mat this Saturday at the Tiger Style Invite hosted by Missouri. Last season, Romney garnered Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honors twice, becoming the first Mustang in program history to win the award more than once.
At Staley High School in Kansas City this weekend, Romney dominated his weight class, posting a 3-0 record to capture the 133-pound title at the six-team tournament which featured two top-25 ranked schools.
The Simi Valley, Calif. native opened the event with a commanding victory over Missouri's Andrew Crapps, pinning him 1:25 into their match. In the semifinals, Romney defeated No. 29 Kade Moore from Missouri by a 10-4 decision to secure a spot in the championship bout. With a title on the line, the 2024 NCAA qualifier grabbed a decisive 10-3 decision over No. 12 Braxton Brown from Maryland, securing three takedowns in the match.
With his showing at the Tiger Style Invite, Romney improved to 4-0 on the season and climbed to No. 13 nationally in his weight class, according to the latest InterMat rankings. Romney now has 10 career victories over ranked opponents and is 30-11 overall in his career.
As a team, Cal Poly took third at the tournament, finishing ahead of No. 21 Little Rock and behind No. 9 Missouri and Purdue.
Cal Poly’s Trevor Tinker won the first Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week award of the season last week. This marks the first in program history the Mustangs have claimed the award in back-to-back weeks.
Cal Poly returns home this week to host a special outdoor dual against No. 14 Stanford at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on O’Neill Green. The dual will take place prior to the final Cal Poly home football game of the season against Sacramento State at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium. You can purchase tickets to the outdoor dual HERE, which includes admission to the dual, access to the Mustang Corral Pregame BBQ served prior to home football games and admission to the Cal Poly football game.
