SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman guard Peter Bandelj finished with 13 points to lead four Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures Friday afternoon as the Cal Poly men’s basketball program completed preparations for the 2024-25 regular season with a 110-53 victory against Division III Caltech inside Mott Athletics Center.
Graduate guard Owen Koonce and freshman guard Guzman Vasilic each supplied 11 points for Cal Poly, which opened up a 17-3 advantage after six minutes, led 53-28 at the break and added 57 second-half points in the tuneup victory.
Freshman guard Cayden Ward added 10 second-half points for the Mustangs, who shot 50.6 (41-for-81) percent from the floor and knocked down 13 three-pointers. Cal Poly kept Caltech – members of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference – to a 30.8 (20-for-65) percent shooting mark.
Bandelj also grabbed a game high nine rebounds and distributed four assists without a turnover in 18 minutes. Senior forward Paul Bizimana added a further eight points and seven rebounds.
Fifteen of Cal Poly’s 18 players scored during Friday’s win.
Returning two starters and six letterwinners from last season and welcoming seven transfers during the offseason, Cal Poly opens its 31st Division I season and 81st as a four-year program when visiting San Francisco on Tuesday, Nov. 5 and California on Thursday, Nov. 7. Tip time both evenings is 7 p.m.
