Cal Poly No. 25 in NWCA Coaches Poll, Boasts 6 Ranked Wrestlers

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After an impressive 3-0 week at home, Cal Poly wrestling has soared up the national rankings, climbing to No. 25 in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll.
The Mustangs also boast six nationally ranked wrestlers in the latest InterMat individual rankings, including three in the top 10.
Over the weekend, Cal Poly posted dual victories over American University, Northern Colorado and Air Force to improve to 4-1 this season. On Friday, the Mustangs defeated American (5-8) 39-3 and then took down the Bears, No. 14 in the Open Mat Team Tournament rankings at the time, 23-15. The Mustangs capped off a perfect weekend on the mat Sunday with a 23-17 triumph over Air Force, ranked No. 15 in the FloWrestling Team Tournament rankings at the time.
In addition, Cal Poly is also No. 22 in the latest Open Mat Team Tournament rankings.
The Mustangs have been receiving votes in the NWCA Coaches Poll since the start of the season, but this is the first time Cal Poly has garnered a national ranking in the poll since Feb. 23, 2023.
Individually, redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer leads the way for the Mustangs in the national rankings, checking in at No. 5 at 149 pounds. The 2023 NCAA Round of 12 qualifier owns an 11-1 record this season and is still undefeated in duals (5-0).
Redshirt freshman Zeth Romney remains ranked No. 9 nationally at 133 pounds after a 3-0 week on the mat. On Tuesday, the Simi Valley, Calif. native became the first Mustang in program history to be named Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week multiple times.
The other top-10 ranked wrestler for the Mustangs is graduate student Adam Kemp. He is ranked No. 10 at 174 pounds with a 12-3 record and 2-0 mark in duals.
Redshirt sophomore Trevor Tinker (No. 24, 285 pounds), redshirt junior Legend Lamer (No. 31/32, 157 pounds) and redshirt freshman Dom Mendez (No. 32, 125 pounds) are the Mustangs' other three ranked wrestlers. Tinker is 5-2 on the year, Legend is 8-4 and Mendez is 10-7.
Cal Poly begins its Pac-12 dual schedule this week. First, the Mustangs travel to Corvallis on Friday for a 6 p.m. showdown with No. 16 Oregon State (4-2). Then the Mustangs return home on Sunday to host Cal State Bakersfield (0-6) at 3 p.m. at Mott Athletics Center.
