SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling program unveiled a brand new, fully donor-funded locker room to the team during a ribbon cutting ceremony Sunday.
The $285,000 full renovation of the locker room housed inside the Mott Athletics Center was completely donor led and features new flooring, lighting, Holman lockers, HVAC and branding throughout. The locker room was also expanded to add a fueling station for the wrestlers.Cal Poly wrestling held a ribbon-cutting ceremony
Sunday for its new locker room.
"This is a great day for Cal Poly wrestling," Cal Poly wrestling head coach Jon Sioredas said at the ribbon cutting ceremony. "We now have a facility that matches our program's goals. We look the part and cannot wait to enjoy this space for years to come. Thank you again to everyone involved, we are incredibly grateful for your generosity and support."
The Mustangs saw plenty of success on the mat this past season — securing the program's first ever Pac-12 dual title — and the student-athletes and coaches see this cutting-edge locker renovation only helping elevate Cal Poly's prominence nationally. Trevor Tinker, a redshirt sophomore heavyweight who earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships this past season, said this investment and commitment from donors truly means the world to the team.
"This isn't just a locker room to us," he said, "it is a reminder of all of our hard work and more importantly a reminder of the people that do so much to support our team from behind the scenes."
The Bragg family provided the lead gift on the locker room renovation with Cal Poly alum Kelan Bragg, who wrestled for the Mustangs from 2008-12, serving as the general contractor on the project. Kelan placed fifth as a heavyweight at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships. Mustang wrestlers react to seeing their
new locker room for the first time."We would like to thank the Bragg family for their incredible generosity," said Sioredas, the 2023 Pac-12 Coach of the Year. "Their willingness and investment in this capital project will have a lasting impact on both our current and future Mustang wrestlers for years to come. I have come to know Kelan pretty well through the years and appreciate his family's unwavering support of our program."
The project also received gifts and support from the Smith, Nelson, Forman, Halsey and Fleury families. RCH Construction, led by former conference champion and four-time NCAA qualifier Ryan Halsey, served as the sub-contractor, and Brandon Medeiros and Dave Norton with Cal Poly facilities and planning partnered on the project.
"We would also like to thank Ryan Halsey and RCH Construction for their exceptional work on this project, it came out looking even better than the rendering," Sioredas said. "We were able to capitalize on every square inch."
