SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Collin Villegas drove in three runs with his 13th home run of the year and an RBI double, but Cal Poly fell 7-4 to Cal State Fullerton in the middle game of a Big West Conference baseball series Friday night inside Baggett Stadium.
With the win, the Titans clinched the three-game series as well as at least a tie for second place in the Big West and the automatic qualifying berth in the NCAA postseason. Cal State Fullerton (20-9 Big West) is one game ahead of CSUN and two in front of UC Santa Barbara (18-11) and has the tiebreaker over both teams with one game remaining for all teams Saturday.
The Titans can clinch a share of the Big West title with idle UC San Diego (21-9) with a win over the Mustangs in the series and regular season finale Saturday.
Cal Poly falls to 20-35 Overall and 10-19 for eighth place in the Big West.
The double by Villegas, his 17th of the year, plus an ensuing run-scoring single by Joe Yorke gave Cal Poly a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Mustangs, however, lost for the 17th time this season when scoring first.
Cal State Fullerton tied the game in the third inning as Nate Nankil doubled down the left-field line to knock in two and took the lead for good in the fourth on another double down the left-field line by Eli Lopez.
Caden Connor doubled inside third base and down the line to drive in another run and scored on a wild pitch for a 5-2 Titan lead. Villegas pulled the Mustangs to within a run with his home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth.
Starter Peyton Jones and two relievers, however, held Cal Poly off the scoreboard the rest of the way while Cal State Fullerton scored single runs in the sixth (groundout) and eighth (Zach Lew single) to pull away.
Jones (5-1) earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) and six hits over six innings with three strikeouts. Seth Tomczak tossed a scoreless seventh and Jojo Ingrassia earned his seventh save with two scoreless frames.
Mustang starter Travis Weston went three innings, giving up two runs and three hits. Ryan Baum (4-5) absorbed the loss, allowing the next four Titan runs and seven hits with four strikeouts over four frames.
Villegas, designated hitter Evan Cloyd and shortstop Aaron Casillas each collected two of Cal Poly's eight hits. Cloyd is 4-for-8 in the series with three RBIs.
Left fielder Carter White went 4-for-5 at the plate, including a double, while Connor and Lopez each added three hits and one RBI to spark the Titans' 15-hit offensive attack.
Saturday's game begins at 1 p.m. and six seniors playing their final game in a Mustang uniform -- Taison Corio, Kyle Scott, Carlo Lopiccolo, Collin Villegas, Derek True and Kaden Sheedy -- will be honored in a pregame ceremony at 12:30.
