MUSTANGS IN THE PROS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly has had as many as three of its former baseball players competing in the Major Leagues this year with a fourth just called up and a fifth on the injured list.
Utility player Mark Mathias played in 15 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates, hitting .275 with two doubles and four RBIs, before he was sent back to Indianapolis on May 8.
Traded to Pittsburgh by the Texas Rangers on March 8, Mathias went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI against the Colorado Rockies on April 17.
Mitch Haniger missed the first three weeks of the 2023 season with an injury before making his San Francisco Giants debut April 24.
Haniger signed a three-year 43.5 million free agent contract with the Giants during the offseason after six seasons with the Seattle Mariners. He belted home runs in back-to-back games against the San Diego Padres on April 29-30.
Southpaw Justin Bruihl has already been called up from Oklahoma City twice by the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 17 and May 9. He has not allowed a run in seven of his nine appearances on the mound with the Dodgers after pitching nine scoreless innings in seven minor league relief stints.
Another pitcher, Erich Uelmen, was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday after sending Bailey Falter to Lehigh Valley. Uelmen was traded by the Chicago Cubs to Philadelphia for cash on Jan. 4 and allowed one earned run in seven relief appearances with the IronPigs before the call-up.
A third pitcher, Spencer Howard, opened the 2023 season for the Texas Rangers on the 10-day injured list and was transferred to the 60-day list with a shoulder injury.
Several other ex-Mustangs are performing well in the minors.
Shortstop Brooks Lee is hitting .274 for the Double-A Wichita Wind Surge with 12 doubles, three home runs and 13 RBIs in 30 games. His three-run eighth-inning double April 27 sparked Wichita to a come-from-behind win over Springfield.
Bryan Woo is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers. His win was last Thursday against Northwest Arkansas with seven scoreless innings and seven strikeouts and he notched eight strikeouts versus Tulsa on April 29.
Bradlee Beesley hit .302 in 13 games at South Bend before he was elevated to Double-A Tennessee on April 25. Four of his six hits for the Smokies are home runs.
Alex McKenna is hitting .333 in seven games at Triple-A Sugar Land, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored against Albuquerque on May 7.
Drew Thorpe, who did not pitch in the minors in 2022 after he was drafted by the New York Yankees last July, is 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA in six appearances for Hudson Valley. He has earned wins against Greenville on April 30 and Aberdeen last Sunday.
Andrew Alvarez is 1-1 with a 3.90 ERA at Hi-A Wilmington, earning a victory April 12 against Hickory and striking out nine in a no-decision versus Brooklyn on April 19.
