VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: GAME 1 | GAME 2
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Aaron Casillas snapped a 1-1 tie with a three-run double to left-center field in the sixth inning and first baseman Joe Yorke broke a 5-5 tie with a walk-off RBI double into the right-field corner in the ninth as Cal Poly defeated San Jose State 6-5 Tuesday night inside Baggett Stadium.
Notching its first walk-off victory in nearly two years, Cal Poly improved to 13-21 for the season. San Jose State fell to 18-15.
Earlier in the day, the two teams completed a game suspended in San Jose on Feb. 20. Collin Villegas led off the resumption of the game with a solo home run to left-center field in the ninth inning, his team-leading seventh blast of the season, as the Mustangs earned a 12-10 triumph.
In the regularly scheduled game, Cal Poly scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Villegas and San Jose State answered with a solo home run off the bat of Dalton Bowling, his eighth of the year, in the second frame.
It stayed at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when Cal Poly loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Villegas. Casillas belted a 1-2 pitch from Corey Sanchez into the gap between left and center field, scoring all three runners and stretching his hitting streak to 14 games.
One batter later, Taison Corio singled down the right-field line to score Casillas and give Cal Poly a 5-1 cushion.
San Jose State battled back with two runs in both the seventh and ninth frames. The Spartans almost took the lead in the ninth, but Bowling's line drive with one out and two runners on base was right at Mustang third baseman Ryan Fenn and he turned it into an inning-ending double play.
In the last of the ninth, Jake Steels drew a one-out walk and, following the second out, stole second base, putting himself in scoring position for Yorke, who doubled down the right-field line on a 1-1 pitch from Darren Jansen, driving home Steels with the winning run.
Cal Poly's last walk-off win prior to Tuesday night was earned on May 29, 2021, when Cole Cabrera drew a bases-loaded walk against Hawai'i.
Cal Poly won despite being outhit 11-10 by the Spartans. Yorke, Casillas and Corio each had two hits for the Mustangs. Five Spartans earned a pair of hits.
The loss went to Jansen (1-3) while Steven Brooks (3-1), the last of seven Mustang pitchers used in the game, tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the win.
In the completion of the suspended game, Cal Poly led 11-10 when the contest at Excite Ballpark in San Jose was halted after eight innings. Villegas homered off his high school teammate, Trevor Ernt. Both are graduates of Beckman High School in Irvine, Calif.
Kyle Scott pitched the bottom of the ninth for his fourth save. The win went to Tanner Sagouspe (1-2), who tossed two scoreless innings in San Jose. The loss was charged to Cade Van Allen (0-3).
Villegas finished with three hits while Ryan Stafford, Yorke and Kemet Brown each added two hits as Cal Poly outhit San Jose State 15-14.
