STANFORD, Calif. -- Three Cal Poly wrestlers have advanced to the final round of the 2023 Pac-12 Wrestling Championship on Sunday inside Stanford's Maples Pavilion.
Bernie Truax seeks his second Pac-12 title Sunday night against Nick Stemmet of Stanford while Luka Wick and Trevor Tinker go after their first conference crowns at 157 and 285 pounds. Wick takes on Daniel Cardenas of Stanford while Tinker faces Cohlton Schultz of Arizona State.
Truax is now 12-1 for the season. After a first-round bye, Truax defeated Kordell Norfleet of Arizona State 1-0 in the semifinals, scoring a second-period escape. Truax beat Stemmett 9-5 in a dual meet earlier this season.
Wick (14-11) also earned a first-round bye before defeating Isaiah Crosby of Oregon State 6-0, notching a takedown in the second period after a scoreless first period, then adding an escape, takedown and riding time in the final period. Wick, who blanked Crosby 3-0 in a dual meet two weeks ago as well, will try to avenge a 6-2 loss to Cardenas in last month's dual meet.
Legend Lamer scored two falls Sunday, this one
against Braden Smelser of CSU Bakersfield in 1 minute, 41 seconds.
After a first-round bye, Tinker (15-7) earned his seventh straight victory with a 5-1 decision against J.J. Dixon of Oregon State, recording a first-period takedown, second-period escape and a penalty point (stalling) and riding time in the final period for the win. Tinker, an 8-2 winner over Dixon in a dual meet two weeks ago, and Schultz have not met on the mat yet this season.
Five other Mustangs earned first-round victories before falling in the semifinals. They are Antonio Lorenzo (125 pounds), Ethan Rotondo (133), Dom Demas (149), Legend Lamer (165) and Jarad Priest (184). Lamer's first-period win was by fall in 1 minute, 41 seconds.
Brawley Lamer lost his first-round match at 174 while Lawrence Saenz lost in the semifinals after a first-round bye.
The Mustangs were a perfect 7-for-7 in the consolation semifinals and all will compete for third and fourth place.
Lorenzo faces Nico Provo of Stanford following his 8-4 win over Eddie Flores of CSU Bakersfield while Rotondo was a 4-2 winner over Joshua Sarpy of Little Rock to set up a second meeting with Jackson DiSario, also of Stanford.
Saenz earned a 6-2 decision against Angelo Martinoni of CSU Bakersfield and will meet Jason Miranda of Stanford while Dom Demas was a 10-4 winner over Josh Brown of CSU Bakersfield and takes on Riley Gurr of Oregon State.
Also in the consolation semifinals, Legend Lamer pinned Tony Negron of Arizona State in 1:56 and meets Tyler Brennan of Little Rock while Brawley Lamer scored a late reversal to edge Triston Wills of Little Rock 5-4 and faces Cael Valencia of Arizona State. Priest tallied a takedown with 15 seconds left for an 8-6 decision over Mason Diel of Little Rock and takes on Brook Byers of Stanford.
Cal Poly is fourth in team scoring after the consolation semifinals with 99 points. Stanford leads with 108.5 points, followed by Oregon State (105.5) and three-time defending Pac-12 champion Arizona State (101.5).
The consolation finals begin at 4:45 p.m., with the championship finals set for 6 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
