LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. – Playing the same two teams it did on Saturday, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team fell Sunday to No. 9 Hawai'i, 4-1, and No. 14 Long Beach State, 5-0, to finish out the Best in the West tournament in Laguna Beach.
In the first match of the day against the Beach, it was a battle at the No. 2 spot by the Mustangs' duo of sophomore Piper Ferch and freshman Izzy Martinez. The pair took Long Beach State's duo to three sets, with the third set going well in extra points. Unfortunately, Ferch and Martinez came up just short, falling in the third 22-20.
Long Beach State won at the other four pairs in straight sets to win the match 5-0.
Cal Poly was right back on the sand to take on No. 9 Hawai'i immediately after their match against Long Beach State. The Mustangs' No. 4 pairing of junior Susie Lloyd and freshman Margo Smith won their match at the No. 4 spot 22-20, 21-19 to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead in the dual.
The Mustangs just missed going up 2-0 after Martinez and Ferch came up just short in another three-set match, falling in the third 15-13.
Hawai'i went on to win the remaining three pairings to win the dual 4-1.
Next up for Cal Poly is its first home event of the season at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex Wednesday, March 8 when the Mustangs host a pair of matches. Cal Poly will face Utah at 5:45 p.m. and Santa Clara at 7 p.m.
