TALLHASSEE, Fla. – Testing itself right out of the gate against some of the top teams in the country, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team lost both of its matches to open the 2023 season Saturday in Tallahassee. The No. 13 Mustangs fell to No. 19 South Carolina and No. 2 Florida State, both by scores of 5-0.
The Mustangs, playing a lineup that consists of four new pairings and four freshmen, started their season with the No. 19 Gamecocks.
Cal Poly fought hard, with multiple sets finishing 22-20 and Cal Poly's No. 4 paring of senior Kalee Graff and freshman Emma Zuffelato going three sets, but ultimately it was South Carolina coming out on top at all five spots.
A short time later, the Mustangs were back on the sand against the host No. 2 Seminoles, last season's national runner-up. Cal Poly, playing the same lineup as it did against South Carolina, was going against a team full of experience. There were multiple close sets but it was Florida State coming out on top in all five.
The Mustangs will look to bounce back Sunday in Tallahassee when they face Coastal Carolina at 5 a.m. PT and No. 16 Florida International University at 10 a.m. PT.
