LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Cal Poly wrestling program fought valiantly and showcased its might against some of the best teams in the country, but the Mustangs saw their run at the 41st Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational come to an end on the opening day Friday.
Graduate student Adam Kemp (174 pounds), redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer (149 pounds) and redshirt freshman Zeth Romney (133 pounds) all won their first two matches at the prestigious tournament to advance to the quarterfinals, however, they each lost their next two bouts, preventing them from reaching the second day.
Despite that, Kemp and Chance, both ranked No. 6 in the country in their respective weight classes, continued their impressive starts to the season as they both went 2-1 at the tourney, which featured 16 of the top 25 wrestling programs in the country. Kemp grabbed wins by decision over North Carolina's Marcus Murabito and Northern Iowa's Jared Simma, while Chance secured a commanding 20-5 technical fall victory over Long Island's Drew Witham and a 4-1 decision over Oklahoma State's Jordan Williams. After narrow defeats in the quarterfinals, Kemp and Chance both medically forfeited their consolation matches.
Romney had a breakout day, earning a pair of upset victories to grab a spot in the quarterfinals at 133 pounds. He opened the tournament by taking down Utah Valley's Haiden Drury, ranked No. 29 in the country, by an 11-4 decision. Then he secured a 10-4 victory over Nebraska's Jacob Van Dee, ranked 27th in the nation and seeded No. 10 in the tourney. Unfortunately, Romney was unable to keep the momentum rolling as he lost his next two bouts, finishing with a 3-2 mark.
Redshirt freshman Dom Mendez helped the Mustangs open the Cliff Keen Invitational with a bang, knocking off No. 23 ranked Eddie Ventresca, a 2023 All-American from Virginia Tech, in the first round by a 14-4 major decision. The 31st-ranked 125-pounder in the nation then fell to top-seeded Matt Ramos, ranked No. 3 in the country, by a hard-fought 9-5 decision. Mendez then bounced back with two wins in the consolation bracket before getting pinned to finish with a 3-2 record.
141-pounder Abe Hinrichsen had a strong showing as well, going 2-2 overall. The redshirt sophomore won a pair of matches by decision.
Redshirt junior Legend Lamer (157), and redshirt sophomores Elijah Blake (165) and Cole Jackson (285) also picked up victories inside the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.
The Mustangs finished 24th out of 35 teams with 22.5 points.
Cal Poly travels to Illinois on Dec. 29-30 to wrestle in the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern.
