SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After an impressive start to the season, the Cal Poly wrestling program is back in the top 25 nationally.
The Mustangs checked in at No. 24 in this week's FloWrestling Team Tournament rankings, marking the fourth consecutive season the program has achieved a top 25 national ranking. Last year, Cal Poly reached 25th in these same rankings.
Despite losing six members of their starting lineup from a year ago, the Mustangs haven't missed a beat so far this season, reloading with a mix of talented underclassmen and experienced, battle-tested veterans.
Cal Poly, who has been receiving votes in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll since the season began, cracked the top 25 in the FloWrestling rankings after some standout performances at the Tiger Style Invite hosted by Missouri on Saturday.
Five Mustangs are currently ranked nationally in their respective weight classes, led by redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer and graduate student Adam Kemp. Chance is ranked No. 5 at 149 pounds, while Kemp currently is No. 7 at 174 pounds. Both wrestlers are a perfect 6-0 on the season.
Redshirt sophomore Trevor Tinker, a 2023 NCAA qualifier, is ranked No. 23 at 285 pounds, while redshirt freshman Dom Mendez (3-2) received a national ranking for the first time in his career, checking in at No. 29 at 125 pounds. Redshirt junior Legend Lamer, a two-time NCAA qualifier, is ranked No. 26 at 157 pounds with a 5-2 record on the season.
Legend, Kemp and Mendez all scored victories over nationally ranked opponents at the Tiger Style Invite. Kemp earned the biggest upset, taking down No. 6 ranked and 2023 All-American Peyton Mocco from Missouri by an 8-7 decision to capture the 174-pound title at the tournament. Kemp was the biggest mover in this week's FloWrestling individual rankings at 174 pounds, jumping up 11 spots. Legend knocked off No. 22 Michael North from Maryland by a 14-8 decision at the tourney, while Mendez secured an impressive win over No. 16 Braxton Brown from Maryland in the semifinal bout at 125 pounds.
Last year, the Mustangs had an historic campaign capturing their first Pac-12 dual meet title and securing third at the Pac-12 Championships — the team's highest finish at the conference finals in 13 years — and Cal Poly is showing no signs of slowing down this season as the program continues to assert its presence nationally.
Cal Poly travels to Pac-12 foe Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday for the Roadrunner Open before heading to Las Vegas on Dec. 1-2 to compete in prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational.
