
Cal Poly to Induct Nine into Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday

The 2022 class of inductees -- Kylie Atherstone (women's volleyball), Hugh Bream (men's and women's tennis), Andre Dome (men's tennis), Chris Gocong (football), Mitch Haniger (baseball), Jill Hancock (softball), Peter Kline (men's swimming), Elise Krieghoff (women's soccer) and Lou Montano (wrestling) -- will be inducted Friday at the Recreation Center's Multi-Activity Center, starting at 6 p.m. The group also will be honored at halftime of Cal Poly's Hall of Fame football game against Portland State on Saturday. Kickoff in Alex G. Spanos Stadium is set for 5:02 p.m.
The nine inductees, announced in September by Mustang director of athletics Don Oberhelman, raises the total number of inductees to 146 individuals, a track and field relay foursome and the 1960 football team.
The 2022 Hall of Fame inductees (in alphabetical order):
| Kylie Atherstone (Kellogg), Women's Volleyball (2005-08) One of the most decorated players in Cal Poly volleyball history, Atherstone was a two-time Big West Player of the Year, a 2007 AVCA Third Team All-American, 2008 AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, two-time AVCA All-Region and four-time First Team All-Big West honoree. During Atherstone's Cal Poly career, she helped the Mustangs win back-to-back Big West Conference titles in 2006 and 2007 as well as reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2007. As an outside hitter, Atherstone was an 11-time Big West Player of the Week recipient throughout her career. She holds the program record for career service aces, ranks second in career kills, fourth for career kills per set average, and is 10th all-time in career blocks. Following a successful college career, Atherstone went on to play professional volleyball internationally with stops in Puerto Rico, Spain, and Switzerland. She was named MVP of the league in Spain during the 2010-11 season, leading her team to the league championship. Atherstone was a member of the United States A2 National Team in 2007 and was named National Player of the Week on Oct. 23, 2006. A communication studies graduate, she currently is a senior manager for People Operations for Healthcare Start-Up after serving six years in human resources. Atherstone and her husband, Matthew Kellogg, live in Rahtdrum, Idaho. |

| Hugh Bream, Tennis (Player: 1977-78; Coach: 1980-88 (Men), 2001-11 (Women) Over a 23-year coaching career, Bream compiled a 377-182 dual match record for a .674 winning percentage. Eighteen of those years were with Cal Poly. He was 156-55 with the Mustang men's program, 133-89 with the women's team and also coached at San Diego State from 1989-93. He guided the Mustangs to an NCAA Division II men's team championship in 1986 and coached numerous All-Americans and All-Big West performers over his tenure, including 1986 national Division II doubles champions Bob Zoller and Paul Landry. Bream, who had a court named in his honor at Cal Poly in 2018, was a five-time ITA Regional Collegiate Coach of the Year. During his time as coach of the USA Junior Davis Cup Team from 1986-88, Bream coached such players as Jim Courier, Michael Chang and Jared Palmer. He also coached on the ATP and WTA professional tennis tours, coached the USA World Cup B16 team in 1986 and has coached at all four tennis majors (U.S. Open, Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open). Bream is still teaching tennis and coaching promising local juniors as the assistant tennis professional at Avila Bay Athletic Club. He also is helping to deliver groceries to needy individuals through the Estero Bay Kindness Coalition in Morro Bay and helps with tennis fundraisers for various organizations in the area. Bream played one season of tennis with the Mustangs after transferring from Pima Community College in Tucson, where he played No. 1 singles and earned a No. 7 national ranking. The San Marcos High School (Santa Barbara) graduate earned his undergraduate degree from Cal Poly in physical education in 1980 and his master's degree, also in physical education, in 1982. He and his wife Carol live in Morro Bay. |

| Andre Dome, Men's Tennis (2009-13) One of the best players in program history, Andre Dome was a two-time Big West Player of the Year, Big West Freshman of the Year, NCAA All-American, and set four program records during his time at Cal Poly. Dome, a native of nearby Arroyo Grande and a two-time prep All-American and 2007 high school singles champion at the Ojai Invitational, was a four-time First Team All-Big West honoree in singles and three-time First Team All-Big West honoree in doubles. As a freshman in 2009, he was named Big West Freshman of the Year, becoming the first Mustang to earn the award. With Dome, the Mustangs won the Big West Conference title in 2012 and made the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2012. Individually, Dome made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in both singles and doubles during his career, the only Mustang in Division I history to ever do so. As a senior in 2013, Dome dominated the dual match season to the tune of a 21-2 record in singles, a program record for wins in a season. He was also 17-4 in doubles that year which helped him be named a 2013 NCAA All-American and the Big West Player of the Year. Dome still holds program records for career singles dual match winning percentage (77.3%), most dual match singles wins in a season (21), combined singles and doubles dual match wins in a season (38), and combined singles and doubles career dual match winning percentage (74.8). Following his outstanding career at Cal Poly, Dome went on to play professionally on the ATP Tour for two years, reaching a singles ranking as high as No. 426 in the world. He retired in 2015 with a career ITF record of 41-29, including three titles altogether as well as winning the Mexico F5 Championship and Canadian F5 crown. He now works as a Quality Assurance Software Engineer for Talentsky, Inc., in San Francisco. |

| Chris Gocong, Football (2001-05) A sack master, Gocong earned the 2005 Buck Buchanan Award as the best defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. He earned 212 career tackles (117 solo tackles), 58 for lost yardage, 42.0 sacks (No. 2 all-time in career sacks, No. 3 in FCS). His 23.5 sacks in 2005 remains an NCAA Division I-AA (FCS) record while his 17.5 sacks in 2004 is No. 12 in the NCAA FCS record book. A two-time All-American, Gocong played in the East-West Shrine game in 2006 at The AlamoDome. He was drafted in the third round of 2006 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and competed in the NFL for seven years (2006-09 at Philadelphia, 2010-12 at Cleveland). In 67 career games in the NFL, Gocong recorded 314 total tackles (228 solo), 27 for lost yardage. He is a Santa Barbara Athletic Roundtable Hall of Fame inductee and is active with Santa Barbara's Fighting Back Mentor Program, Compassionate Care of Carpinteria and the Santa Barbara Channelkeepers. The Carpinteria High School graduate earned his degree in biomedical engineering at Cal Poly in 2006, married his wife Amanda in 2012, is a father of two children, Layla and Gia, and currently works for Gocong Development Group in Santa Barbara as a private equity investor. Suffering for years from post-concussion syndrome, Gocong turned to painting as a form of active meditation for healing. He is a visual artist with a passion for capturing emotion through portraiture, figurative art and abstraction with showings in New York City, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara galleries. |

| Mitch Haniger, Baseball (2010-12) Haniger played in the outfield at Cal Poly from 2010-12 before he was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the compensatory first round (38th pick overall). He played briefly for Arizona in 2016 before being traded to Seattle prior to the 2017 season and has played for the Mariners ever since. He played in 157 games in 2018, hitting .285 with 26 home runs and 93 RBIs, and 157 more in 2021, hitting .253 with 39 home runs and 100 RBIs. This summer, Haniger hit .246 with eight doubles, 11 home runs and 34 RBIs in 57 games, missing almost three months of the regular season with a high-ankle sprain but helping Seattle reach the postseason for the first time in 21 years by going 15-for-46 (.326) in his final 11 starts with seven multiple-hit games. At Cal Poly Mitch hit .317 in his career with 26 home runs and 137 RBIs. His 47 career doubles is No. 5 all-time while his 26 home runs is No. 4 and 137 RBIs No. 5. The Archbishop Mitty High School (San Jose) graduate was Big West Field Player of the Year in 2012, Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year in 2010 and was a first-team All-Big West selection in 2012 as well as earning three All-American awards -- second team by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America and third team by College Sports Madness. Mitch and his wife of six years, Amanda, live in Seattle and they have one child. |

| Jill Hancock, Softball (1983-86) Hancock was an NFCA All-America second team honoree in both 1985 and 1986 and a two-time NCAA All-West Region honoree (1985-86). She was a four-time All-California Collegiate Athletic Association selection (1983-86) and ranks seventh in program history with a .332 career batting average, eighth with a .456 slugging percentage and 15th with 67 RBI and seven homers. Her 37 runs in 1985 remains fifth-highest single-season total in program history. Hancock led Cal Poly to second-place regional and conference finishes in both 1985 and 1986 and was nominated for Cal Poly Female Athlete of the Year in 1986. She competed in the 1983 National Sports Festival, helping Team USA win the gold medal while playing left field, and earned ASA All-American honors in women's "C' slow-pitch in 1994. More recently, Hancock captured Open Champion and Amateur Champion in herd work at the 2021 U.S. Arabian Horse Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. She was inducted into the Norco HorseTown USA Hall of Fame as a U.S. National Arabian Horse Amateur and Open Champion earlier this year. A Cal Poly graduate in child and family development, Hancock currently lives in Norco, Calif. and has been a store manager for Home Depot in San Bernardino, Calif., for 29 years. She is a Home Depot District Community Team Captain, focusing on taking care of active and retired veterans. |

| Peter Kline, Men's Swimming (2007-11) One of the most prolific swimmers in Cal Poly history, Peter Kline was an NCAA Division I Mid-Major All-American in 2011 and a four-time First Team All-Conference honoree. As a swimmer with the Mustangs from 2007-11, Kline set school records the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard IM, 400-yard IM, 400-yard freestyle relay, 800-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and 400-yard medley relay. He still owns four of those school records in the 200 back (1:43.55), 200 IM (1:46.89) and 400 IM (3:45.91), as well as his 2010 400 medley relay team whose time of 3:15.45 has still yet to be broken. The Fresno, Calif., native qualified for two NCAA Championships during his time at Cal Poly in 2010 and 2011 and is one of only two Mustang men's swimmers to qualify for multiple NCAA Division I Championships since the university elevated to Division I in 1994. Kline competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, placing 48th in the 400 IM, and in the 2010 U.S. Short Course Nationals, finishing seventh in the 400 IM. He also was the overall winner of the Alcatraz Open Water Swim five times (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2015) and holds four records (100 and 200 IM, 50 and 100 back) in the 30-34 age group of the Pacific Masters program. Kline currently lives in Santa Rosa, Calif., with his wife Bryn and works for BWX Limited as a strategic sourcing manager for packages and raw materials. In his spare time, he is a hobbyist, makes pizza, salsa and wine and still stays active in swimming, both pool and open water. |

| Elise Krieghoff, Women's Soccer (2012-15) Krieghoff played women's soccer at Cal Poly from 2012-15. She was Big West freshman of the year in 2012 and first-team All-Big West in 2013, 2014 and 2015. She was named Big West Offensive player of the year in 2013. Krieghoff scored five goals against Fresno State as a sophomore in 2013, earning numerous awards for the week. She was a Soccer News College Boot Award finalist in 2013, Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate in 2014 and Senior Class Award All-American in 2015. Krieghoff holds Cal Poly school records for single-season goals (21), career goals (52) and game-winning goals (7). In 2013, she was one of 26 players invited to the U.S. Women's National Team U-23 training camp held in Chula Vista, Calif. Krieghoff earned her degree in fire science at Cal Poly in 2016 and played professionally for the Boston Breakers (NWSL) in 2016 and Vålerenga (Norway) in 2017. Since then, she served as junior varsity head coach for three seasons at San Luis Obispo High School and was a volunteer firefighter with the San Francisco Fire Reserves from 2018-20. Krieghoff has worked in community outreach for young women at local booths in San Francisco and Seattle and is a member of the Camp Blaze organization which promotes firefighting for young women. She currently is living with her partner, Oliana Luke, in Seattle, Wash., and is working at Station 6 as a firefighter in Seattle's Central District. |

| Lou Montano, Wrestling (1978-83) Montano was a three-time national qualifier and two-time All-American at Cal Poly. He placed second in NCAA Division I National Championships at 158 pounds in 1983 (eighth in 1982) and earned 41 wins in 1983, sharing the school record with Cedric Haymon. He was a two-time NCAA Western Region champion and compiled a 112-16-1 record from 1978-83 at Cal Poly. Montano was a team captain and selected Most Valuable Wrestler of the team three times (1981-83). He was inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012 and the National Wrestling Hall of fame in 2016. Montano was a two-time Greco-Roman national place winner and qualified for the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials. Montano lettered in football, wrestling and baseball at Calexico High School. His coaching career began as an assistant coach at Cal Poly (1984-86) and CSU Bakersfield (1987-91), followed by becoming head coach at Columbia (1991-2000), where he was 69-46-1 in nine seasons. Montano earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Cal Poly in 1986 and obtained his master's degree in education at CSU Bakersfield in 1990. He has worked for the last 22 years as director of testing and principal investigator/director for the High School Equivalency Program (HEP) at CSU Bakersfield, securing grants from the U.S. Department of Education to assist migrant students successfully complete GED tests and progress into higher education. Montano also has served as assistant tournament director of the California State High School Wrestling Championships since 2003. Montano and his wife Sharon live in Bakersfield. |
