SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly junior-to-be right-hander Bryce Warrecker is the seventh-highest pro prospect from the Cape Cod League, according to Baseball America's staff of writers.
Pitching for the Orleans Firebirds, Warrecker compiled a 4-1 record and 2.07 ERA in 10 appearances on the mound this summer. He was named most outstanding pitcher of the year in the Cape Cod League.
Warrecker, who made six starts for the Firebirds, struck out 35 batters and walked just eight over 39 innings. He combined with two relievers on a no-hitter June 29 in a 4-0 win over Chatham, striking out seven with no walks in his six innings of work.
"Armed with some of the best command on the Cape, Warrecker consistently executed this summer and limiting hits and walks," the staff at Baseball America noted. "The 6-foot-8 right-hander delivers from a low sidearm slot that enhances deception on his three-pitch mix. A standout basketball player for Santa Barbara (Calif.) High School, Warrecker is thin, projectable and moves well on the mound for his size.
"While Warrecker doesn't overpower, he executes all three pitches at a high level and limits hard airborne contact. His fastball sits 89-92 mph with ride and late life. His slider is a sweeper that generated more than a foot of horizontal break at peak and a changeup with good velocity and vertical separation off of his changeup. Warrecker's command was easily plus this summer, with all of his pitches registering strike rates around 70%, a rare occurrence even for pitchers with good command."
Warrecker threw a shutout inning as the East Division starter in the 2022 Cape League All-Star Game.
At Cal Poly last spring, Warrecker made 13 appearances on the mound last spring, all in relief, and posted a 2-0 mark and 5.81 ERA with 30 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings.
Another Mustang pitcher, rising junior Evan Tomlinson, earned first-team All-West Coast League honors. The Northgate High School graduate and Walnut Creek, Calif., native posted a 2-2 record and 1.71 ERA for the Portland Pickles. All of his 13 appearances on the mound were in relief and he struck out 31 batters over 26 1/3 innings.
