Several Cal Poly Pitchers Excel in Summer League Play

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Several Cal Poly pitchers are having productive seasons in summer league play, led by rising junior Bryce Warrecker with the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod League.
Warrecker, who combined with two relievers on a no-hitter June 29, has posted a 4-1 record and 1.36 ERA in nine appearances on the mound so far. He pitched one scoreless inning in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game and, since the no-hitter, earned victories against Harwich on July 13 (five scoreless innings, four strikeouts) and Yarmouth-Dennis on July 27 (one unearned run over seven innings, six strikeouts).
Warrecker has struck out 30 batters over 33 innings this summer and has made five starts along with four relief appearances on the mound.
Three other Mustang pitchers own 2-0 win-loss records in the Northwoods League.
Derek True has a 2.51 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 14 1/3 innings for Eau Claire, earning a win against Bismarck on July 8 with five scoreless innings, six hits, one walk and five strikeouts. True was drafted in the 20th round last week by the Oakland Athletics.
Also at Eau Claire, Chris Baytosh is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings. He earned victories against Mankato on July 7 (four scoreless innings) and Waterloo on July 17.
At Willmar, Steven Brooks is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 21 innings. He tossed eight scoreless innings in a 4-0 win over Waterloo on July 12 with one walk, six strikeouts and four hits allowed.

Playing for the Sonoma Stompers, Noah Larkin is 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings. He tossed five innings for a win against Walnut Creek on July 16.
At the plate, Cal Poly's top hitters this summer are Joe Yorke at Eau Claire, Taison Corio at Walnut Creek and newcomer Evan Cloyd at Portland.
Yorke is hitting .291 in 29 games with five doubles, 21 RBIs and eight multiple-hit games. Corio sports a .280 average for the Crawdads with four doubles, a triple, three home runs, 16 RBIs and four steals in six attempts while Cloyd is hitting .327 with three doubles, a triple, six RBIs, three steals and five multiple-hit games.
Corio drove in five runs with a grand slam and an RBI single against Healdsburg on July 17 and went 9-for-19 during a five-game hitting streak from July 14-18, knocking in seven runs.
Catcher Ryan Stafford joined the Corvallis Knights last week and is hitting .400 through his first seven games, going 8-for-20 with a double and seven RBIs. In his first game July 18, he went 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Austin Caviness had an eight-game hitting streak (14-for-29, .483, seven RBIs) snapped by Corvallis on July 7. Hitting .352 at the height of the streak, Caviness has gone 9-for-52 (.173) since, dropping to .264 on the year. He has five doubles, one home run, 12 RBIs and eight steals.
Jacob Steels, an outfielder from Righetti High School and Hancock College in Santa Maria, is hitting .297 for Portland with 10 doubles, two home runs and 18 RBIs in 33 games. He has stolen seven of eight bases and has produced 11 multiple-hit games, going 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs against Walla Walla on July 16 and back-to-back three-hit games July 10 and 12.
