SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The 2022-23 college wrestling season is five months away, but it's never too early to release preseason polls.
InterMat has done just that and ranked seven Cal Poly wrestlers this week, led by No. 6 Bernie Truax at 197 pounds and No. 13 Dom Demas at 149.
The rankings reveal a few bumps in the Mustang lineup.
Demas wrestled at 141 pounds in his first four seasons at Oklahoma, placing fourth in the 2019 NCAA Championships, and wrestled five times at 149 pounds last year. He is slotted to wrestle at 149 pounds at Cal Poly during the upcoming season.
That allows Lawrence Saenz, 14-7 last season, to remain at 141 pounds, where he is ranked No. 30 by InterMat.
Redshirt freshman Luka Wick placed fifth in the state high school finals at 138 (2018) and 145 (2019) pounds, posted a 12-0 mark at 149 pounds in open tournaments last season and is expected to move up to 157 to make room for Demas.
Wick, younger brother of four-time NCAA All-American Evan Wick, is ranked No. 28 at 165 this week.
Legend Lamer, a two-time national qualifier at 149 pounds in 2021 and 2022 and 40-15 so far in his Mustang career, will jump up two weight classes to 165, where he is ranked No. 28.
Adam Kemp, 15-6 at 174 pounds and a national qualifier last March, moves up to 184 for the 2022-23 season and is ranked No. 19.
That forces Truax, who was 19-4 at 184 pounds and earned his second fourth-place national finish three months ago at Detroit, to climb to 197 for his junior campaign.
Antonio Lorenzo, a first-time national qualifier last season who posted a 20-11 record at 125 pounds, likely will remain in that weight class.
"We cannot be more excited about the lineup we plan to put out this year," said seventh-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. "We have a wealth of experienced young men who have had success, and more importantly, continue to learn and grow."
For now, the vacancies at 133, 174 and 285 likely will be filled by Abe Hinrichsen (14-18 as a true freshman), fifth-year senior Brawley Lamer (48 career wins at 157 pounds) and either Trevor Tinker or newcomers Nathan Glass or Luke Meyer, respectively.
With two returning All-Americans and five national qualifiers on the roster, Cal Poly is listed No. 28 in the dual meet rankings by InterMat.
