2022 ABCA ALL-REGION TEAMS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Shortstop Brooks Lee and pitcher Drew Thorpe have earned spots on the 2022 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-West Region First Team.
Lee captured the honor for the second year in a row while Thorpe has earned his first all-region award.
ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team selections are automatically nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-American teams will be announced on Friday prior to the start of the 2022 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
In addition, catcher Ryan Stafford, first baseman Joe Yorke and center fielder Reagan Doss have been nominated for the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove Team. Finalists will be announced via the Rawlings Sporting Goods Twitter account on Monday, and the Gold Glove winners in all divisions will be announced next Wednesday.
One of five finalists for the National Pitcher of the Year Award, Thorpe accumulated 14 consecutive quality starts. In 15 starts this season, the Mike Krukow Most Outstanding Pitcher Award recipient went 10-1 and compiled a 2.32 ERA with 149 strikeouts in 104.2 innings of work on the mound.
Holding opposing hitters to a .175 batting average, Thorpe wrapped up his 2022 season at Hawai'i with 10 strikeouts, the ninth time this season and 13th of his Mustang career he had reached double digits in strikeouts.
That performance moved Thorpe back into the national lead at the end of the regular season. Including playoff games, Thorpe is now second behind Oregon State's Cooper Hjerpe (155). Hjerpe's father, Carl, pitched at Cal Poly in the mid-1980s.
Thorpe surpassed the school single-season strikeout mark of 140 set by Erik Bratlein in 1988 and also is No. 4 in career strikeouts with 284, 12 shy of Dan Chergey's record set during the 1990-93 campaigns.
One of six finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award as the nation's top collegiate shortstop, Lee has claimed back-to-back Big West Field Player of the Year awards, just the second player in Big West history to earn the honor twice. The other was Cal State Fullerton's Mark Kotsay in 1995 and 1996.
The Mustangs' Ozzie Smith Most Valuable Player Award for the second year in a row, Lee helped lead Cal Poly to a 37-21 record and second-place finish in the Big West. On the year, he hit .357 with 25 doubles, 15 home runs and 55 RBIs to go with a .951 fielding percentage.
Lee led the Big West in hits (84), walks (46), doubles (25), home runs (15), runs scored (56), RBIs (55), slugging percentage (.664) and total bases (156) and was second in batting average (.357) and on-base percentage (.462).
The San Luis Obispo High School graduate produced hitting streaks of 19 and 12 games and led the Mustangs with 26 multiple-hit games and 16 multiple-RBI contests. Twice he was named Big West Field Player of the Week, giving Lee five such awards in his Mustang career.
Both Lee and Thorpe were among five Mustangs landing on the All-Big West First Team. Both also were semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award.
Lee and Thorpe join infielder Mark Mathias (2014), outfielder Mitch Haniger (2012) and infielder Matt Jensen (2009) as Cal Poly's first-team all-region selections in Division I.
Only other player from a Big West school earning all-region honors was UC Irvine relief pitcher Gordon Ingebritson on the first team.
