SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Thanks in part to a recent home run power surge, Cal Poly shortstop Brooks Lee has earned several awards.
The redshirt sophomore on Monday was named Big West Conference Field Player of the Week, one of 10 players tabbed by Collegiate Baseball as National Players of the Week and Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Cal Poly played four games last week, winning them all to extend its winning streak to 11 games, and Lee belted home runs in each of the contests to lift his season total to 15, tied for No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time single-season home run list with Grant Desme (2007) and Luke Yoder (2010).
Lee hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning at Pepperdine on Tuesday, a solo shot in the fourth inning of Friday's Big West series opener against UC Davis, a two-run blast in the eighth inning Saturday and another two-run four-bagger in the fourth frame of Sunday's series finale at Baggett Stadium.
Lee was 9-for-19 (.474) during the week en route to his second Big West award this year and fifth career honor. He doubled twice and knocked in a total of eight runs in the quartet of games.
For the season, the San Luis Obispo High School graduate is hitting .374 and leads the Big West in home runs (15), hits (83), doubles (24) and RBIs (54) in addition to several other categories.
Lee has two grand slams as a Mustang, both against Cal State Fullerton. The switch-hitter hit one right-handed in the sixth inning a year ago (May 15, 2021) at Baggett Stadium and the other one left-handed 363 days later, on May 13, 2022, also in the sixth inning, at Goodwin Field.
The five-time 2021 All-American is a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, awarded to the top college baseball player, and also has landed on the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list, which is presented to the No. 1 amateur baseball player in the country.
Cal Poly raised its record to 35-20 with last weekend's sweep of UC Davis and wraps up the 2022 regular season this weekend with a three-game Big West series at Hawai'i. The Mustangs are two games ahead of the Rainbow Warriors in the battle for second place.
