SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Joe Yorke is the only baseball player in Cal Poly's 28-year Division I history to produce a pair of five-hit games.
And he did it within a span of five days.
Adding to the list of his recent accomplishments, Yorke had a five-RBI game in the middle game of the Mustangs' series at Cal State Fullerton, going 3-for-5 with a home run, double, single and two walks.
Yorke, who wears 55 on his back, likely has a new lucky number these days.
Against both CSU Bakersfield on May 6 and Pepperdine on May 10, Yorke doubled twice and singled three times to etch his name in the Cal Poly baseball record book.
Yorke has been on quite a run at the plate over the last four-plus weeks, putting together a 17-game hitting streak and another streak of reaching base safely in 25 consecutive contests, both of which are still active, and adding 85 points to his batting average for the season.
In four games last week, Yorke went 11-for-19 (.579) at the plate with four doubles, one home run, two walks and 11 RBIs as Cal Poly stretched its winning streak to seven games with a 16-4 victory over Pepperdine and a three-game series sweep at Cal State Fullerton by scores of 13-4, 6-2 and 2-1.
That performance has earned for Yorke his first Big West Conference Field Player of the Week award.
In leading the Mustangs to their first-ever series win at Goodwin Field, Yorke went 6-for-13 with two doubles, a two-run home run in the series opener, his third of the year, and eight RBIs.
A transfer from Boise State two years ago, Yorke is 20-for-37 (.541) with 14 RBIs over his last eight games and 36-for-78 (.462) during his current 17-hitting streak to bump his average up to .337 with 11 doubles and 41 RBIs.
With a 17-7 mark for second place in the Big West by two games over Hawai'i (15-9), Cal Poly (31-20 overall) is the only team left that could keep No. 18 UC Santa Barbara (21-3) from winning the Big West title, sitting four games back with six to go. The Mustangs host UC Davis this weekend while the Gauchos entertain UC Riverside.
Yorke, a graduate of Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, is Cal Poly's second first-time Big West Field Player of the Week in a row, following true freshman catcher Ryan Stafford. He is the fourth Mustang honoree for 2022 after shortstop Brooks Lee (March 7) and Collin Villegas (April 4). They have also earned three pitcher awards, two by Drew Thorpe and one by Noah Larkin.
