Six-Game Winning Streak Snapped as Cal Poly Falls to Cal 9-3

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Cal unleashed a 14-hit offensive attack, led by Dylan Beavers with three hits, including his 11th home run of the season, and avenged a 10-run loss to Cal Poly two weeks earlier with a 9-3 victory Tuesday afternoon on Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Beavers broke open a 7-3 contest with a two-run shot in the eighth inning and drove in a total of three runs for the Bears (13-15). Nathan Martorella also had three hits and Cole Elvis added two hits and a pair of RBIs as Cal Snapped Cal Poly's six-game winning streak.
No. 17 Cal Poly (18-11), which scored its runs in the middle innings after Cal jumped to a 4-0 advantage, had other scoring chances in the game, leaving the bases loaded in the first inning, two on base in the third and failing to score despite two singles and a double in the sixth.
Sam Stoutenborough (1-1) pitched five innings in relief for the win, giving up one run and six hits with a pair of strikeouts. The loss went to Mustang starter Kyle Scott (0-3), who allowed all four runs in the third inning and struck out three over two-plus innings.
Cal Poly closed the early 4-0 deficit to a single run with two runs in the fourth on back-to-back solo home runs by Nick Marinconz and John Lagattuta and one more run in the fifth as Brooks Lee doubled and came home on a pair of groundouts.
Cal, however, added a run in the sixth and scored two controversial runs in the seventh before Beavers salted the victory away with his two-run blast in the eighth.
In the seventh, Cal loaded the bases with a single and two walks. Jason Franks struck out Hance Smith for the first out before Cole Elvis hit a slow roller up along the first-base line. Franks flipped the ball to catcher Collin Villegas, who appeared to keep his foot on the plate while catching the ball, but the home plate umpire ruled the runner safe, signalling that the throw pulled Villegas' foot off the plate. A video replay appeared to show otherwise, but replay was not available to the umpires.
Trevor Tishenkel's grounder to second base knocked in another run for a 7-3 Cal lead and Beavers' two-run home run in the eighth completed the scoring.
Cal Poly's nine hits included a double and single by Lee, extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Marinconz and Lagattuta both added a single and home run in 2-for-4 days at the plate.
Cal Poly, a half-game back of first-place UC Santa Barbara in Big West games, returns home to resume conference play this weekend with a three-game series against preseason Big West favorite Long Beach State (14-13, 4-5 Big West), which suffered a 5-1 loss at San Diego State on Tuesday.
