SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly freshman catcher Ryan Stafford has been added to the 2022 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Watch List.
As one of four Mustangs who have started all 35 games this season, Stafford is hitting .295 with 12 doubles, a pair of home runs and 16 RBIs.
The Folsom High School graduate has committed just two errors in 282 chances, has thrown out seven runners trying to steal a base and has picked off one other base runner. Stafford has not allowed a passed ball this year.
Stafford is one of three Big West catchers on the watch list. The others are Connor Burns of Long Beach State and Thomas McCaffrey of UC Irvine.
The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission added eleven catchers to the official watch list this week.
The watch list for the award, given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher, will be updated to include other candidates until May 4. The semifinalists will be announced May 19 and ballots will be sent to the national voting committee at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists.
The finalists will be announced June 7 and the final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced on June 29.
Former Mustang catcher Myles Emmerson was on the Buster Posey watch list a year ago.
