TEMPE, Ariz. -- Cal Poly 165-pound wrestler Evan Wick captured a Pac-12 title while Legend Lamer, Adam Kemp and Bernie Truax earned second-place finishes at the Pac-12 Championships held Sunday at Desert Financial Arena on the Arizona State campus.
All four will compete in the nationals, Cal Poly's largest contingent for the NCAAs since 2012.
Wick scored an 8-7 decision over Shane Griffith of Stanford for the crown, notching an escape with 41 seconds remaining and riding time that proved to be the difference.
In defeating the defending 165-pound national champion for the third time this season, Wick tallied takedowns in the first and second periods for a 4-3 lead. The transfer from Wisconsin chose bottom for the final period and jumped ahead 6-3 with a reversal.
Griffith recorded a reversal of his own to pull with one at 6-5 and Wick escaped for a 7-5 lead. Griffith's takedown with one second remaining was not enough as Wick had already locked up the riding time point for the one-point win.
Wick, who had a first-round bye and pinned Matthew Olguin of Oregon State in 2 minutes, 46 seconds, in the semifinals, will take an 18-0 record into the nationals.
Lamer fell 11-5 to Kyle Parco of Arizona State in the 149-pound final. Lamer's five escapes were not enough as Parco notched four takedowns, an escape, a penalty point and riding time.
Kemp dropped a 4-3 decision to Tyler Eischens of Stanford in the 174-pound final.
Eischens jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first period with a penalty point and takedown while Kemp countered with an escape and takedown in the second period to tie the match at 3-3. Eischens escaped 10 seconds into the final period and held on for the win.
Truax, the Pac-12 champion at 174 pounds a year ago, was pinned by Trey Munoz of Oregon State in the 184-pound final Sunday night. Munoz scored a takedown 70 seconds into the match and pinned Truax shortly thereafter.
Truax defeated Munoz in an 11-2 major decision for the Pac-12 title at 174 a year ago while Munoz was wrestling for Arizona State. Earlier this year, Truax also beat Munoz 3-1 in the Matmen Open and 5-2 in the dual meet.
No Mustangs reached the consolation finals for third and fourth place. Finishing fifth were Antonio Lorenzo at 125 pounds, Lawrence Saenz at 141, Brawley Lamer at 157 and Trent Tracy at 197.
Wick and Legend Lamer have qualified automatically for the nationals while Kemp and Truax won true-second matches to qualify as well. It will be Wick's fourth trip to the NCAAs (though the 2020 nationals were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the second trip for Truax and Lamer and the first for Kemp.
Truax pinned Jacob Hansen of CSU Bakersfield in his true-second match while Kemp was a 2-1 overtime winner over Triston Wills of Little Rock in another true-second match to clinch spots in the nationals.
Lorenzo is a strong candidate for an at-large wild-card spot at 125 pounds.
As a team, Cal Poly finished fourth with 88.5 points. Arizona State claimed its fifth Pac-12 team title in six years by a half-point over Oregon State, 115 to 114.5, with Stanford third at 97.
The NCAA Division I National Championships will be held March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich.
