2022 BIG WEST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT BRACKET
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomores Kobe Sanders (above) and Brantly Stevenson both finished with 17 points to lead four Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures as the Cal Poly men's basketball program overcame a double-digit, second-half deficit to edge UC San Diego in Saturday evening's regular season finale inside Mott Athletics Center, 80-76.
Junior Trevon Taylor finished scored 13 points and fellow guard Camren Pierce added 12 for Cal Poly (7-20, 2-12), which finished the regular season tied for ninth place in the Big West Conference standings alongside CSU Bakersfield (7-18, 2-12), but was relegated to the No. 10 seed for the March 8, 10-12 Big West Tournament with the Roadrunners having swept the two-game season series.
Cal Poly will open Big West Tournament play against seventh-seeded UC Davis (12-10, 5-6) in a Tuesday, March 8 opening-round matchup at 8:30 p.m. inside the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nev. No. 8 CSUN will meet ninth-seeded CSU Bakersfield in Tuesday's other opening-round matchup at 6 p.m.
The Cal Poly-UC Davis winner advances to face No. 2 Cal State Fullerton in a Thursday, March 10 quarterfinal matchup at 6 p.m. Cal Poly started last year's Big West Tournament with an opening-round victory against Cal State Fullerton.
During Saturday's matchup versus UC San Diego (13-16) – a result that did not count toward the Big West standings with the Tritons still in their Division I reclassification process – Cal Poly trailed, 61-51, with nine minutes to play.
Sanders, however, sank one of his five three-pointers on Cal Poly's next possession and Taylor followed with a layup.
A jumper by Mustang freshman guard Julien Franklin eventually dropped UC San Diego's lead to 67-66 with four minutes remaining before a Pierce layup provided Cal Poly its first lead since the opening minutes.
The two sides traded the lead twice more before buckets from Taylor and junior forward Alimamy Koroma broke a 72-72 deadlock to place Cal Poly up four with 38 seconds to go.
Two free throws from Tritons forward Toni Rocak followed by a Mustang turnover and Francis Nwaokorie jumper squared the scoreline for the seventh and final time. Guard Jake Killingsworth was whistled for a foul on Cal Poly's ensuing possession and Pierce – then Stevenson – finished a collective 4-for-4 from the free throw line to cement Cal Poly's win.
