
Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Evan Wick

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Evan Wick, who won five of six matches en route to a third-place finish in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships last week, has been selected as the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week for the third time.
Wick earned his third All-American honor on the mat and fourth overall with one major decision and four decisions at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich.
The transfer from Wisconsin finished the year with a 23-1 record, losing only to national runner-up Shane Griffith in a 7-6 decision in the semifinal round. Wick closed out his collegiate career with a 133-22 record.
Wick earned an 11-3 major decision against Matthew Olguin of Oregon State in the opening round and decisioned No. 16 Luke Weber of North Dakota State 10-5 and No. 9 Peyton Hall of West Virginia 6-2 to reach the semifinals.
Following the loss to Griffith, the top-seeded Wick was a 10-4 winner over No. 3 Alex Marinelli of Iowa and 3-2 against No. 6 Cameron Amine of Michigan for third place at 165 pounds.
Wick also placed third as a freshman in 2018 and fourth as a sophomore in 2019. The 2020 NCAAs were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the National Wrestling Coaches Association awarded Wick All-American honors.
Wick was 7-0 in dual meets at Cal Poly this season and 39-5 in his collegiate career. He also was named Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the week in November after claiming first place at the Michigan State Invitational in November as well as in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in early December.
A three-time California state place winner while attending San Marino High School, Wick majored in rehabilitation psychology at Wisconsin and is majoring in interdisciplinary studies at Cal Poly.
