DETROIT, Mich. -- Cal Poly's five national qualifiers produced 10 wins and a pair of All-Americans at the 2022 NCAA Championships inside Little Caesars Arena.
Evan Wick closed out his collegiate career with a third-place finish at 165 pounds while Bernie Truax earned his second consecutive fourth-place finish at 184 pounds on Saturday.
"Evan and Bernie both showed a great deal of fortitude this weekend," said sixth-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. "We are incredibly proud of our program. Back-to-back top-25 finishes."
Wick earned a 3-2 decision against Cameron Amine of Michigan in the medal round, scoring a penalty point in the first period and escapes in both the second and third periods. Amine's only points came on a takedown in the second period after choosing the neutral position.
It was Wick's second win over Amine this season. The Wisconsin transfer posted a 4-1 triumph in the semifinals of the Las Vegas Invitational three months earlier.
Truax surrendered a takedown with 30 seconds to go which snapped a 4-4 tie and fell 6-4 to Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa in his consolation finals match. Truax edged Keckeisen 6-5 in the quarterfinals.
A takedown gave Truax a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. An escape and takedown by Keckeisen and an escape by Truax gave the Panther wrestler a 4-3 lead after two periods. Truax escaped nine seconds into the final period to tie the match and almost secured a takedown when Keckeisen managed to turn things in his favor for the win.
Cal Poly finished 22nd with 28 points in the team standings. Penn State ran away with the title, scoring 131.5 points, followed by Michigan (95) and Iowa (74).
"We continue to learn and grow and it shows in the biggest moments," Sioredas said. "Collective effort from everyone involved. Could not be prouder."
In the consolation semifinals earlier Saturday, Wick defeated a long-time nemesis, Iowa's Alex Marinelli, in a 10-4 decision while Truax notched a 3-1 decision over Kaleb Romero of Ohio State.
Wick, who had lost four straight times to Marinelli after earning a major decision as a freshman, scored the first eight points in the sixth meeting between the pair. Wick tallied a takedown in the first period and four-point and two-point near-falls in the second period for his 8-0 advantage and added an escape and riding time in the final period.
After a scoreless first period, Truax scored all of his points in the second period with an escape and takedown. Romero needed just six seconds to escape in the third period, but neither wrestler could add any more points in the bout.
For Wick, it was his fourth All-American achievement. He was third as a freshman, fourth as a sophomore and was voted All-American honors in 2020 when the nationals were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wick finishes the year 23-1 for a 133-22 career mark with 19 falls. Truax was 19-4 this season and now owns a 64-25 career record.
The last time Cal Poly had a pair of All-Americans was 10 years ago when Boris Novachkov placed third and Ryan DesRoches finished eighth.
