Cal Poly Powers Past California Baptist for Third Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Alimamy Koroma scored a game high 19 points and graduate guard Chance Hunter added 15 Saturday evening as the Cal Poly men's basketball program overcame an early second half deficit to hand California Baptist a 64-53 defeat inside Mott Athletics Center.
Senior guard Trevon Taylor added nine points and six rebounds for Cal Poly (4-3), which trailed California Baptist, 42-34, with 14-and-a-half minutes to play following a 1-for-8 shooting start to the second half. Hunter though sank a jumper and three-pointer on successive possessions to kickstart a 13-2 run.
Cal Poly trailed just once more at 48-47 with eight minutes to go before Koroma nailed three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. The Mustangs, who shot 94.1 (16-for-17) percent from the free throw line, then limited California Baptist to just two buckets in the final five minutes to push their winning streak to three straight.
Junior forward Brantly Stevenson grabbed a game high eight rebounds for Cal Poly and produced four assists. Collectively, Cal Poly committed just nine turnovers.
Cal Poly concludes a two-game home stand on Saturday, Dec. 10, hosting Portland State at 7 p.m.
During Saturday's first half, Cal Poly was kept to a 1-for-7 shooting start and just three points during the opening seven minutes. Koroma, however, spurred a 12-3 run with his first basket of the evening and Cal Poly grabbed a 15-12 lead nine-and-a-half minutes before the break.
Still leading 25-18 with six minutes remaining, however, Cal Poly was held to just one field goal the remainder of the half as California Baptist forced s 32-32 tie heading into the locker room.
