SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly's 56-game schedule for the 2023 baseball season includes 11 contests versus Pac-12 schools and a 15-game home stand in March as part of a 31-game Baggett Stadium slate of contests.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs will host three-time national champion Oregon State for a four-game non-conference series in early March, 1995 national champion Pepperdine on April 4 and close out the year with a three-game Big West series versus four-time national champion Cal State Fullerton on Memorial Day weekend inside Baggett Stadium.
"The 2023 baseball schedule will again be challenging with a mixture of non conference series and single games against quality teams from different conferences, including 11 games against the Pac-12," said Lee, who has guided the Mustangs to 614 victories in 20 seasons as head coach.
The 2023 season opens with Cal Poly hosting Missouri State for three games Feb. 17-19. The Mustangs won two of three games against the Bears on the second weekend of the 2022 campaign in Arlington, Texas.
After a three-game set at Cal in late February, the Mustangs open their 15-game home stand with four games against Oregon State on March 2-5.
Xavier comes to Baggett Stadium on March 7 followed by a three-game series against UNLV on March 10-12. USC visits San Luis Obispo on March 14 before Cal Poly opens Big West play with home series versus Hawai'i on March 17-19 and UC Irvine on March 24-26.
The Mustangs also will host UC Riverside (April 6-8), UC San Diego (April 28-30) and Cal State Fullerton (May 25-27) for three-game Big West series.
Cal Poly's conference series on the road are against Long Beach State (March 31-April 2), CSU Bakersfield (April 14-16), CSUN (April 21-23), UC Davis (May 5-7) and UC Santa Barbara (May 19-21).
Cal Poly's bye week in the Big West schedule will be May 12-14 and the Mustangs will play a three-game set at Pac-12 member Utah that weekend.
In addition to Xavier, USC and Pepperdine, Cal Poly will host Santa Clara on April 11, San Jose State on April 18 and Fresno State on May 9 for midweek games while visiting San Jose State on Feb. 20, Fresno State on March 28, Santa Clara on April 25 and Pepperdine on May 2.
The Mustangs will play 10 games against three teams who qualified for the 2022 NCAA regionals -- four versus Oregon State and three each against UC Santa Barbara and Missouri State -- and five non-conference series in addition to 10 Big West sets.
The Mustangs finished alone in second place in the Big West and 37-21 overall a year ago, winning 13 straight games before falling to Hawai'i in the season finale. The Mustangs finished in the top four in the Big West for the 17th time in the last 19 years (not counting the pandemic-shortened 2020 season) and have placed second four times in the last five full seasons and seven times since 2005.
Cal Poly returns 22 lettermen, including four position players who started 30 or more games in 2022 and 11 of last year's 17 pitchers for the 2023 season. A total of 20 newcomers have been added to the roster as well.
Top returnees include first baseman Joe Yorke, catchers Ryan Stafford and Collin Villegas and utility player Matthias Haas along with pitchers Travis Weston, Bryce Warrecker, Steven Brooks, Zach Button and Derek True.
Shortstop Brooks Lee and pitcher Drew Thorpe, both five-time All-Americans last spring, were drafted and signed professional contracts last summer and the Mustangs also need to replace reliever Jason Franks, who earned 11 saves a year ago, and designated hitter Matt Lopez, infielders Tate Samuelson, Nick Marinconz and Brett Borgogno and outfielders Reagan Doss and John Lagattuta, among others.
The Mustangs claimed 11 of the 15 weekend series on the 2022 schedule and split a four-game set versus Harvard. In 2017 and 2021, Cal Poly played each of its 56 games in the Golden State. The Mustangs' visit to Utah in May will be the lone out-of-state trip in 2023.
Since and including 2011, Cal Poly is the only Big West team to have a winning or .500 overall record each year (excluding 2020) and, also since 2011, Cal Poly is the only Big West team to finish at least fourth or higher every year, including one first place, six seconds, one third and three fourths.
