SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After earning an impressive seventh-place finish at the Joe Piane Invitational, the Cal Poly men's cross country team received votes in the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll for the first time since the 2013 Week 5 poll.
The Mustangs garnered four votes in Week 4 of the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll released Tuesday, their most since grabbing seven votes in the 2012 preseason poll.
On Friday, the Cal Poly men went stride-for-stride with some of the best teams in the nation in the Blue race at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational, finishing ahead of Michigan, who was ranked No. 27 in last week's USTFCCCA poll, and behind five teams ranked in this week's national poll — No. 13 Notre Dame, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 22 Alabama, No. 25 Montana State and No. 30 Charlotte.
Three runners placed inside the top 30 individually for the Mustangs in a competitive field — Xian Shively (25th), Jake Ritter (27th) and Aidan McCarthy (28th).
The last time the Cal Poly men were ranked in the National Coaches' Poll was 2011 when they finished the season at No. 28.
The Mustangs also moved up to No. 7 in this week's West Region rankings, jumping ahead of UCLA and Boise State, who they finished in front of at the Joe Piane Invitational. After not appearing on the West Region poll prior to the season or during the first two weeks of the rankings, Cal Poly debuted at No. 9 in the Week 3 West Region poll.
The Cal Poly women are currently ranked No. 14 in the West Region.
