SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly wrestler Bernie Truax, who posted a perfect 3-0 mark in Cal Poly's first three dual meets of the 2021-22 season, is the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Cal Poly won two of the three duals, bouncing back from a 20-18 loss to No. 5 Arizona with a 28-6 triumph over Northern Illinois and 40-0 against Little Rock on Sunday in Little Rock, Ark.
Truax's first win of the week was a fall in 2 minutes, 4 seconds, against Jake Ortiz of Arizona State. Then on Sunday, he earned a 6-2 decision over Brit Wilson of Northern Illinois followed by an 18-3 technical fall against Brayden Dillow of Little Rock.
While Truax is ranked No. 5, Wilson owns a No. 19 national ranking. Both are returning NCAA All-Americans -- Truax placing fourth at 174 pounds last March while Wilson was sixth at 184 pounds.
A two-time national qualifier, Truax now owns a 9-0 record for the season against collegiate wrestlers, including five wins against nationally ranked matmen. The redshirt sophomore has notched two falls, three technical falls and four decisions for the year and is 54-22 in his Mustang career.
Truax needed just 2 minutes, 4 seconds to pin Jake Ortiz of Arizona State. He built a quick 12-1 lead with a takedown, back-to-back four-point near-falls and, after giving up an escape, another takedown before pinning Ortiz for his second fall of the season and his ninth career fall.
On Sunday, Truax scored a takedown in the first period, an escape in the second period and another takedown in the final period plus riding time for the decision over Wilson. It was just the third loss of the season against 18 wins for Wilson.
Truax jumped to a 12-1 lead in the first period against Dillow and finished with five takedowns and a pair of four-point near falls on his way to the lopsided win.
Versus Little Rock, Cal Poly reached the 40-point mark in a dual meet for the first time since defeating Menlo 40-6 on Nov. 23, 2011 and won by 40 or more points for the first time since outscoring San Francisco State 43-3 on Feb. 13, 2011.
Cal Poly (2-1) returns to action Friday night with a Pac-12 dual meet at Oregon State (5-3).
