SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- For the first time in a decade, four members of the Cal Poly wrestling team are ranked nationally.
The highest ranking belongs to Evan Wick, a transfer from Wisconsin who is a two-time NCAA All-American and three-time national qualifier. Wick is ranked No. 3 at 165 pounds by InterMat.
Bernie Truax, fourth-place finisher in the 2021 NCAA National Championships at St. Louis, a two-time national qualifier and a Pac-12 champion last winter, drew a No. 6 ranking at 184 pounds while Legend Lamer, a national qualifier last year as a redshirt freshman, earned a No. 13 ranking at 149 pounds.
Rounding out the quartet, Lawrence Saenz is ranked No. 32 at 141 pounds. Saenz was a national qualifier in 2020 before transferring from Fresno State to Cal Poly last January.
As a team, Cal Poly cracked the Top 25 at No. 20 in InterMat's Team Tournament Rankings, the first such ranking since the Mustangs were ranked No. 18 late in the 2011-12 season.
"This is the first time that we have been nationally ranked as a team out of the gate," said Jon Sioredas as he heads into his sixth year at the helm of the Mustangs. "We have some exceptional young student-athletes who have made tremendous strides and we cannot wait to watch them continue to develop."
Cal Poly finished fourth in the Pac-12 Championships in February, its highest finish in 11 years, and tallied 16.5 points in the NCAAs for 25th place, its highest finish in nine years.
"With four guys in the rankings, it sets the tone for our team and we truly believe that we have three or four others that are fully capable of entering the national spotlight this season," Sioredas said. "We are looking forward to opening up at the Michigan State Open in November, where we will be tested early."
