SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Former Cal Poly outfielder Mitch Haniger has earned his first American League Player of the Week award presented by Chevrolet.
Haniger helped lead the Mariners to a series victory over the Angels last weekend, going 5-for-11 (.455) with a pair of homers, seven runs scored and six RBIs for Seattle. Haniger homered in four of seven games dating back to before the All-Star break, and he has reached base in 20 straight games dating back to June 25.
He currently has an eight-game hitting streak, including a three-hit game July 16 against the Angels and back-to-back two-hit contests against the New York Yankees on July 8 and the Angels on July 9. Haniger is 12-for-30 (.400) during the streak with a double, four home runs and 11 RBIs.
The 30-year-old from Arcnbishop Mitty High School in San Jose missed 662 games after suffering a ruptured testicle when he fouled a ball off during a game at T-Mobile Park on June 6, 2019. Then he suffered an abductor tear in his lower core that required surgery. Then, the following January, he underwent back surgery on a herniated disc.
In 90 games this season, Haniger is hitting .266 with 17 doubles, 22 home runs and 58 RBIs, primarily from the No. 2 spot in the Mariners' batting order.
Meanwhile, pitcher Spencer Howard has made three starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley after nine appearances on the mound with the Philadelphia Phillies in the first three months of the 2021 season.
On July 17, Howard tossed three innings against Buffalo, allowing one run and five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in the no-decision.
Howard is 1-0 with a 1.25 ERA in six appearances on the mound for Lehigh Valley and 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA in nine stints on the mound -- five starts and four relief appearances -- for the Phillies.
Cal Poly's other Major Leaguer this season, Milwaukee Brewers utility player Mark Mathias, is sidelined for the season after undergoing labrum surgery on his right shoulder May 4. He suffered the injury while diving for a catch in right field in a Cactus League game on March 9.
Meanwhile, outfielder Nick Torres continues to hit the ball well for the Vaqueros de la Laguna in the Mexican League. Going 33-for-86 (.384) in his last 20 games, Torres lifted his average 94 points to .326. The streak includes four home runs and 19 RBIs.
Pitcher Bobby Ay has been promoted to Hillsboro in the Northwest League after lowering his ERA from 9.45 to 6.00 in his last seven outings at Visalia. He has made two relief appearances for the Hops, giving up one earned run over 2 2/3 innings.
Another pitcher, Taylor Dollard, has earned victories in his first four starts at Everett, also in the Northwest League, after being promoted from Modesto. He earned his fourth win on July 18 against Tri-City despite giving up seven runs and 10 hits over five-plus innings.
Two former Mustangs are on the seven-day injury list -- outfielders Alex McKenna at Corpus Christi and Bradlee Beesley at South Bend.
After making 11 starts for the Teneessee Smokies this season, pitcher Erich Uelmen has made his last two appearances on the mound out of the bullpen and has allowed no runs and one hit over 2 2/3 innings.
Currently Cal Poly has four players in Triple-A (Torres, Howard, Chase Johnson at El Paso and Zach Zehner at Jacksonville) and four more in Double-A (McKenna, Uelmen, Kyle Marinconz at Harrisburg and Nick Meyer at Binghamton.
