SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Outfielder Alex McKenna is on another tear at the plate, Taylor Dollard earned a victory in his first Hi-A start and Nick Torres is warming up in the Mexican League.
At Asheville, McKenna has collected 35 hits in his last 34 games, lifting his batting average to .305. The former Mustang outfielder went 26-for-784 (.351) in a 27-game stretch from May 18 through June 17, then after two hitless games, has gone 9-for-22 (.409) in his last five games.
McKenna produced an 11-game hitting streak during the first run and has 15 multiple-hit games this season, going 4-for-5 with a solo home run against Winston-Salem on June 23. He has homered 13 times and has driven in 31 runs in 41 games this season.
Meanwhile, Dollard, elevated to Everett from Modesto on June 19, made his first Hi-A start Sunday and allowed two earned runs over seven innings in the 9-3 victory, striking out nine Tri-City batters without a walk.
Torres, playing for the Triple-A Laguna Vaqueros, who are based in Torreón, produced back-to-back three-hit games against Tijuana on June 25-26 with two doubles, a home runs and four RBIs. He had an eight-game hitting streak (10-for-29, .344) with three doubles, one home run and seven RBIs earlier this month abd is hitting .278 with six home runs and 24 RBIs so far this season.
In the Major Leagues, outfielder Mitch Haniger has hit safely twice in three consecutive games for the Seattle Mariners, lifting his average nine points to .255. He has 20 multiple-hit games this season with 16 doubles, 17 home runs and 45 RBIs in 74 games.
Right-hander Spencer Howard made his fifth start for the Philadelphia Phillies on June 14 at Dodger Stadium and allowed three runs and two hits with four strikeouts in four innings. Howard is 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA in nine appearances on the mound for the Phillies.
Bobby Ay has earned victories in each of his last two relief appearances and has allowed just one earned run over four innings (three appearances) for the Visalia Rawhide, lowering his ERA to 7.89.
Infielder Kyle Marinconz has been elevated to Double-A Harrisburg while catcher Nick Meyer has split time with Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse the last three weeks.
After his release from the New York Yankees organization almost three weeks ago, Zack Zehner has played nine games for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Miami Marlins' Triple-A affiliate, and is hitting .250.
Mustangs in Triple-A are Meyer, Zehner, Torres and pitcher Chase Johnson with the El Paso Chihuahuas. In Double-A are Marinconz and pitcher Erich Uelmen with the Tennessee Smokies.
Former Mustang pitcher Joey Wagman is preparing to play for Team Israel in the 202One Summer Olympics at Tokyo by playing for Tempo Prada in Czechoslovakia, where he is 5-2 with a 2.21 ERA and 74 strikeouts over 53 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .211.
