SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- After a layoff of more than 21 months, Mitch Haniger is back in the lineup of the Seattle Mariners and has found a new home in the leadoff spot of the batting order.
So far, so good.
Haniger is hitting .268 with seven doubles, eight home runs and 23 RBIs in 28 games. The former Mustang outfielder and 2012 Big West Conference Player of the Year opened the season with a five-game hitting streak and, at the end of an eight-game streak was hitting .351 with four doubles and four home runs.
Haniger missed the second half of the 2019 season after rupturing a testicle and undergoing surgery. Back issues sidelined Haniger most of the 2020 campaign. He was a supplemental first-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2012, signing for $1,200,000, played briefly for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2016 and was traded to Seattle prior to the 2017 campaign.
Pitcher Spencer Howard has made three relief appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies and has spent the rest of his time at the club's Alternate Training Site. He is 0-0 with an 8.31 ERA and eight strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.
Utility player Mark Mathias is on the 60-day injury list for the Milwaukee Brewers after injuring his shoulder while trying to make a diving catch in a Cactus League game.
Most minor leagues open their 2021 seasons tonight or Thursday night. A dozen former Mustangs have been assigned to minor league teams while Mike Miller is a free agent and Bradlee Beesley has yet to be assigned.
Taylor Dollard, Cal Poly's most recent draftee -- fifth round by the Seattle Mariners in 2020 -- will start his professional career with the Modesto Nuts in the California League.
In Triple-A are infielder Peter Van Gansen at El Paso, pitcher Chase Johnson at Sacramento and outfielder Nick Torres with the Vaqueros de la Laguna in the Mexican League. Those in Double-A include outfielder Zach Zehner at Somerset, pitcher Erich Uelmen at Tennessee and catcher Nick Meyer at Binghamton.
