VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS -- OPENER | NIGHTCAP
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Hitting just .223 and averaging only 3.9 runs over its last 27 games, Cal Poly combined for 23 runs on 34 hits in sweeping a Big West Conference baseball doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday inside Baggett Stadium.
Brooks Lee belted a sixth-inning grand slam, drove in six runs, Cole Cabrera produced Cal Poly's first five-hit game in three years and Andrew Alvarez recorded another quality start as the Mustangs defeated the Titans 13-3 in the first game.
Nick Marinconz collected his third and fourth doubles of the day, Cabrera belted his fourth home run of the season and Travis Weston notched his third complete game of the year as Cal Poly completed the sweep with a 10-0 shutout in the nightcap.
With the wins, Cal Poly took a 3-0 advantage in the series and improved to 23-24 for the season and 13-18 in Big West games. Cal State Fullerton has lost six straight and nine of its last 10, falling to 19-27 and 12-15.
In the opener, Lee sent the first pitch from Titan reliever Peyton Jones over the left-center field wall to break open a 4-2 contest. It was Lee's eighth home run of the year, his third as a right-handed hitter, and he added a two-run double in the seventh to lift his RBI total for the year to 45.
Lee's six RBIs surpassed his previous single-game high of five against CSUN on March 22.
Cal Poly's last grand slam was by Elijah Skipps in 2018 against UC Davis.
Cabrera singled five times in a 5-for-6 game at the plate, just the second five-hit game by a Mustang in eight years. Nick Meyer had five hits against Pepperdine in 2018 and you have to go back to 2013 for the next five-hit game in the Cal Poly annals, produced by Denver Chavez against UC Santa Barbara.
Alvarez (6-3) allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings for the victory. The redshirt junior southpaw struck out three and walked two, throwing 102 pitches.
The loss went to Ryan Hare (0-4) as he allowed four runs and five hits in one inning.
Catcher Myles Emmerson lifted his batting average back above .300 with his fifth career four-hit game, three singles and a double. Marinconz doubled twice, driving in two runs, and Taison Corio added two singles.
Cal Poly's 18 hits are a season high, surpassing the 17 hits in a 13-12 loss to UCLA in early March.
Zach Lew, Austin Schell, Miguel Ortiz and Nate Nankil all had two of Cal State Fullerton's 10 hits.
In the nightcap, Weston improved to 5-6 by pitching seven scoreless innings and scattering three hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. He threw just 72 pitches in the game halted after seven innings due to the Big West's run rule this spring.
Marinconz had three hits, including two more doubles, and has lifted his average 119 points to .254 by going 13-for-34 (.382) over his last 11 games. Left fielder Sam Biller singled three times for his first three-hit game as a Mustang.
Emmerson, Lee and Corio each added two hits while Emmerson and Tate Samuelson both drove in a pair of runs for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly scored early and often.
Cabrera led off the first inning with his homer and Samuelson's single up the middle tallied two more runs. A fielder's choice and Lee's RBI double to center field made it 5-0 in the second and run-scoring singles by Corio, Biller and Emmerson gave Weston and the Mustangs an 8-0 cushion.
Cal Poly added single runs in the fifth (sacrifice fly by Joe Yorke) and sixth (wild pitch) to establish the 10-run lead.
The Mustangs turned two double plays to keep Cal State Fullerton's offense quiet and the Titans left just two runners on the base paths.
In the series, Cal Poly is averaging 9.7 runs a game and hitting .439 at the plate. The Mustangs won Friday's game 5-1 with 13 hits.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. with Cal Poly redshirt freshman right-hander Kyle Scott (1-2, 4.08 ERA) to face Cal State Fullerton sophomore right-hander Kyle Luckham (3-7, 5.65 ERA).
