Cal Poly Scores Seven in Seventh en route to 8-2 Win in Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Andrew Alvarez established new career highs for wins, strikeouts, innings pitched and pitches thrown while Reagan Doss produced three hits and three RBIs as Cal Poly rallied to defeat UC Riverside 8-2 in the opener of a Big West Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
Alvarez struck out 12 over eight innings, throwing 128 pitches and improving to 5-2 on the year, helping Cal Poly to its second win of the series.
Scoring seven times in the seventh inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit, Cal Poly is 19-15 overall and 9-9 in Big West games while UC Riverside fell to 10-19 and 8-14.
Doss singled to drive in a run in the fourth inning and, after opening the seventh-inning rally with a leadoff double, his two-run single in the same frame capped the seven-run uprising.
Other key hits in the rally were an RBI double by Nick Marinconz to tie the game at 2-2 and a two-run single by Matt Lopez to give Cal Poly the lead for good. Nick DiCarlo was hit by a pitch for an RBI and Joe Yorke contributed a sacrifice fly.
In addition to Doss' three hits, Myles Emmerson added two hits. UC Riverside outhit Cal Poly 10-8, led by Nathan Webb with two singles.
Twice in his Mustang career, Alvarez had struck out eight in a game. On Saturday he struck out the side in the first, seventh and eighth innings and scattered eight hits.
The loss went to Tucker Juline (2-2) as he allowed six runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.
Second game of the doubleheader will start at 4:25 p.m.
